United Kingdom 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Orkney Grey
I’ve seen lots of both 2.4 and 2.2 cars standard and tuned tick or make tapping injector noises when pushed on the throttle when cold and more so on cold mornings especially until they warm up a little , some do it some not.

We have seen fuel quality. temperature, fuel filter history or the lack of as well as the oil service history and cars miles covered all play some part on if they do it a little or a lot or if they don’t at all, and so we came to the conclusion after checking all mechanics are good.

It is what it is and it’s one of those engine characteristic noises many cars have in some form that is not heard much at all if the car is warmed up correctly before accelerating hard especially if they are mapped for more power.

Assuming I’m talking about the same transit van noise of course. Smile

My 2.2 Tdci was making this ticking sound at 85,000k. Sounded like injectors, because if you immediately coasted down a hill so that the fuel cut off, then it went quiet. Many mechanics have looked, but could find no issues. Dealer claimed they could not hear it..... But it's now at 240,000k's and still does it. So seems it's not necessarily a harbinger of doom. IT's been remapped and the vehicle has not been treated gently, regularly towing 3000kgs in hot weather.
