Strongly disagree - the old W463 was woefully out of date, but at least had some integrity given its links to the original military version; the new W463 is just embarrassing, possibly the most cynically-conceived car on sale. Mercedes avoided the difficult decisions and took the easy option when they didn't know how to replace it - on what planet does a car which will never have any commercial or professional variant benefit from the underpinnings of your average twin cab? Even worse at £150k+.

Whilst you may not like it, you cant argue that in yours own words

How can you update something which is forty-plus years out of date?

Is wrong. They did update it again, and again and again. If LR had adopted a similar principle there wouldnt have been such a gulf between the new and old defenders.

I own an old Wrangler and like the classic Defender it is a great vehicle you can repair/modify with plain tools in your own garage. I enjoy working on both. Mine was daily driven until I put it on jackstands reworking the suspension. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

Good for Ford Thumbs Up

Listening to the consumer who knows what they want instead of talking vertical lines and other such Censored ......

The aftermarket (who is working alongside Ford) and have competed at the King of the Hammers have a 40 inch tyre and suspension kit ready to go.

its going to be exciting time in the US. Sadly not here.....yet(?)

One of the engineers hasn't ruled it out, saying that a RHD is do-able, but it seems more likely to arrive in RHD markets as an EV, so probably four years away, or so. I keep reading all the news snippets on the likelihood of RHD as I so want one. There is even talk of someone enterprising importing them and converting them, like they used to with Cadillacs and such like. Obviously bang goes the warranty, though. Australia is making big noises about a RHD Bronco as they so want it. I'm afraid it is VERY typical of Ford to wave money away! I admit to having £40,000 in my account, not doing anything. It's there if Ford want it. Now left.

Ram trucks are imported into Australia and then converted to RND.

Wouldn't take a leap of faith for Ford to do the same with the Bronco, then with the UK / Australian trade deal to then send them here.

Can't see that ever happening again.

Also a quick look at the approach and departure angles of the new vehicle tells us they simply *cannot* be better off road than the old. The ramp/breakover angles are also inferior. Its advantages come from electronic trickery to maintain traction.

As stated elsewhere, the new Defender is the best Discovery ever made, but it is unfortunately quite ugly. I should say though that I find 99% of current cars from all manufacturers to be ugly, I'm not singling JLR out there. But I, like many others, love the retro styling of the Jeep, Bronco etc because they are distinctive in a world of jelly moulds. 2011 110 USW

Spot On.
And contrary to what I thought upon their introduction, they are selling VERY well indeed, with multiple dealers in all parts of Aussie.
The very excellent conversion in done by the Walkinshaw Group who, prior to Holden "ending" in Australia, were known as "HSV" (Holden Special Vehicles") who for 30+ yrs produced modified Commodores incl our supercharged VF2 GTSR.
Walkinshaw have also produced a modified VW Amorak for VW Aus.
There have been various "rumblings" about the U.S. Ford range coming to Aussie, but there's been nothing from Ford to date.
Pickles.

Oh my, you’re just not listening are you? If Philip says the New Defender can do everything that the classic Defender could, and also brings so much more to the table than a forty-year out of date vehicle (despite it being the model that firmly established the legend of Land Rover) then it’s true. Everything he says about the classic Defender and it’s archaic underpinnings, the macho, masochistic, living in the dark ages owners, such as those on this forum, (who clearly don’t know better and should be firmly told by him and JLR what they should like and want in the new Defender), is on message.

What’s more, he’s also clearly got a depth of vision the 150k buyers of the new Bronco don’t have for he can see how old it looks and how rubbish it will be, so we should count ourselves lucky that he told us so; indeed I suspect he saved us all thousands by talking directly to Ford management, (who also listened to him because he is the oracle of all things ‘off road’), that the new Bronco is simply crap and it will never sell in the UK, so they changed there global sales plans thus.

It just astounds me that you would call him a troll, he most certainly isn’t. Indeed, have you not worked out who he is? I just worked it out.

1. He knows everything
2. He likes to tell classic Defender owners that they’re wrong for liking their old bits of tin
3. He doesn’t listen to fans of the classic Defender or believe they have a say in the ND
4. He blindly believes the New Defender is the best 4x4xFar even though it will never be used as such
5. He clearly has a problem with big strong men with dirty hands, perhaps he prefers a suit, cravat and moisturiser?
6. He has a monstrous sense of self belief
7. He looks down at we lot who wanted ‘simple’ and ‘practical’ and ‘flexible’ and ‘affordable’. Those words aren’t in his vocabulary.
8. He hates aftermarket stuff and toys. What a puerile pastime. If he doesn’t control what you stick on your car, it’s not worth having.
I could go on.

But I found a photo of him, just so we can all properly visualise who we’re dealing with:

The funny thing is that the designer of the Bronco is British and defiantly does not look like he should be on a BBC daytime house makeover programme…… Laughing

Lots of macho men and women in this photo, with outdoorsy shirts and beards and everything. Paul Wraith bottom right looking up. Thumbs Up

Interesting video. Wraith starts by saying he listened to a potential user of the Bronco and the influence she had over the final design. Chalk and cheese philosophy with that of GMcG.
