I would hazard a guess that it would have been updated at a faster rate to be able to be sold in the US.
But as the US market back then was not heavily into overlanding as it is now, nor extreme capable off roaders (not rock crawlers ) I would take a guess that we could have seen a rebodied Discovery 3 / Range Sport in both a station wagon and a leisure pickup, again big sellers in the US to target the Toyota market. Ford pickups are more the working man’s vehicle of choice, plus their cheaper to purchase, bigger and have the range of 150, 250, 350, 450 and 550 so I would have thought that Ford would use the differences to service a range of clients. At least that’s one person idea. The nice thought would be a classic Defender bought back to life at the same time as the full sized Bronco. Oh, and Mr Cresote would have been given his P45 years ago. |

Slightly OT, but I was thinking about this just yesterday, with regard to the ND. I was out and about yesterday and in a short space of time saw a D4, D5 and ND. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, to me the ND looked like the logical follow-on to the D4, but what I wondered is why so many of the ‘bling’ modifiers have gone mad for the ND and skipped/ignored the D4/D5? To my recollection I’ve never seen a pimped D4 or D5 and certainly not the slew of them hitting YouTube and Instagram as we’re seeing with ND. I wondered why? Is it the shape of the vehicle? It’s purpose? Or is it because ND is actually closer to a true SUV (more urban and street biased) than either of those vehicles and others on the market such as Bronco and Wrangler? I think that's because of the hype surrounding the launch of the new Defender. Regardless of what you think of the styling, the D5 was just the lastest incarnation of a long line of gradually improved vehicles. The Defender was obviously a much bigger deal and is seen as 'cool'.
I always thought it a shame that LR never produced a Defender on the D3/D4 underpinnings. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

There’s a strong argument for saying that D1/2 were really the obvious ‘development’ of the Defender. i.e. still super capable off road, robust, fixable, adaptable, good towing, good carrying etc but with styling cues and some creature comforts and road manners, thrown in. Bit like the progression of the Land Cruiser. So I think you’re right, if they’d created a Defender from the further improved underpinnings (chassis, suspension and engine) of the D3/4 it could have been something very special, very capable. In effect a dialled down or simplified D4 which many think was the ultimate LR. Perhaps that’s what the Grenadier is? Monsieur Le Grenadier

IMO the D2 would have been a better starting point since it retained live axles and a chassis. The D4 had already morphed too much into SUV territory ever to be a true Defender replacement.
This line of conjecture is however very likely to lead us back into previously discussed territory with highly polarized and aggressively articulated views, so perhaps we'd better not go there! |

It’s a shame they didn’t order the base model with the Sasquatch package - 35” MT’s, front & rear lockers, then add HD bumper and skid plate.
Even for the 4 door auto with paint, Sasquatch, HD bumper, rubber mats it comes out at ~£31,300 plus local taxes. Not that Ford would sell it here without a big mark up, but that would be ~£38K on the road here in UK, so £20K less than cheapest Defender. https://shop.ford.com/configure/bronco/202...DR.55G.%5D Add in the fact that if you took the Defender off road against it, not even taking punctures into account 😉😉, the Bronco in the spec above would wipe the floor with it. |

Blackwolf surely you’re not suggesting that some people, me, may have suggested in the past in a suggestive (pointed) way, that the suggestion by some other suggesters (made that up) that the ND is a worthy replacement to the Defender is suggestively wrong and that my oft made suggestion, suggested by many others I’d suggest, is that it is a more worthy replacement to the D4? If your conjecture marries with that suggestion I’d suggest that what you’ve said is far from suggestive. I do like the quick change this appears to offer:

That's what happens when you have a British designer at the helm that has a better understanding of heritage and the target market than he does up and down lines, hair dye and cravats... |
