The wife has a TomTom which I use when Im in her car. I agree its useful, but for security reasons I always remove the windscreen bracket when leaving the car, and never leave the tomtom in the car when unattended. To be honest, its a right pain in the arse
I refuse to use it in my Defender. Instead, if going on a long journey I take a road map and also draw the route on the inside of the windscreen with a chinagraph pencil. Means I dont have to take my eyes away from the road to check the route. Good tip Warpig
I plugged in a route this evening for about 100 miles and it gave me a direct route through all the country lanes Back to Halfords for instruction - the manual is useless... |

Ask it to either ask you every time for planning preference or select 'fastest' ad default, sounds like you had it on 'shortest' which will be as near as damn it ad the crow flies!

Will do Spoke to the rear camera people today Foggy, hopefully get something ordered tomorrow hopefully Also spoke to Gigglepin
There is a blank button on the dash and I was wondering if that could be used to power the cameras 12v monitor - would there be a dedicated fuse and feed for it in the fuse box? Anyone know? |

I have been pondering over camera's for a while , including something for the back of the trailer however the camera for me doesn't appear to be a problem , there are loads and there appear to be plenty of places to route them.
I think you could even get the 4/5 camera setup as per the optional extra on the D4. Not found a touch screen yet but I am sure there is one out there. However I keep staring at the dash thinking there must be a clever place to mount a permanent screen , not keen on one of the ones that stands on top of the dash , think I would get a smashed window and a missing screen rather quickly , thought about the glovebox area but that is maybe too far over etc...etc.... The other option i was thinking was mounted in the sun visor , right where i can see it if I need it but folded up out of sight as long as I remember. Any genius places to put a monitor out there ? You can get rear view mirrors with built in monitors, but they are chunky and wide, more suitable for motorhomes than dainty little defenders - you would have to cut and re trim the visors to accommodate them.

Fix the monitor on the inside of the tailgate door window, facing back towards the cab. Then all you have to do to see the monitor when reversing, is turn your head and look behind you
Sorry, Im not helping am I |

Failing that you could fit the seats the wrong way round and have a wonderful view when reversing - all other misguided assistance warmly welcomed !!

Maybe not such a bad idea , you could maybe see it in your mirror which is where you naturally look when reversing and you wouldn't need to get one of the bulky mirror monitors. Maybe not right at the back otherwise it may be a little small in the rearview mirror. Wonder if you can get a roof mounted DVD player where you can spin the screen 180 deg , or project it on the rear screen , maybe not as daft as it sounds. I thought of a new stereo but I am not keen to replace the existing one one and one of those with a pop up monitor would likely cover some buttons on the dash. I just don't want the car to end up looking like an explosion a gadget factory but for me having a defender isn't about doing without either , just the reverse there are probably more accessories for the defender than any other car. 2011 Defender XS 110 Station Wagon - Rejected 2008 Discovery 3 XS Auto (Gone) 1997 Discovery ES Auto 300TDI (Traded in on a flat bed) |

Barry you can get a flip up screen that might work on the visor - just wouldn't need flipping up, maybe...
Put in code mon037 http://shop.reversingcamerasuk.com/epages/...06294_shop I'm thinking about fixing the camera on the rear wheel bracket with it poking through a wheel spoke. I had thought about having the camera behind the rear screen fixed to the side of the brake light housing but the picture and angle wouldn't be so good although it would be kept cleaner than on the rear wheel. Foggy has the best solution high up on the roof rear, I'm just trying to avoid drilling holes...It's the best place for one though! |

if you go for one of the very small camera options it can fit on the inside face of one of your bumperettes, the angle is fine since the cameras are super wide angle. Also looks very neat and unobtrusive. Wiring can then either go along the top of a chassis rail into the engine bay or straight along the rail and into the seat box via the grommet.
and if you had thought about it a bit, you could have bought a sat nav which you could also use as your screen for the camera |
