Are you sure they are waving or just simply covering their faces as not to get recognised.....? Craig Rogers

I'd say only about one in three defender drivers even bother to wave these days, lots of them are driven by poseurs it seems, with no real interest in the brand. 2011 110 USW

Get waved at by plenty of fellow Defender drivers.
That's cos we are more friendly down these 'ere parts. Most Defenders are also bought for the correct reasons rather than to pose in. So there's no brand angst or "keeping up with the Joneses." Most relaxing. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

My take is the waving thing is fairly recent (last 25 years or so) and only developed since the clubs, 4x4 magazines and latterly online forums morphed numbers of Land Rovers into Landies owned by enthusiasts who like to wave at each other. Many MG and Rolls Royce owners (I've been both in the past) also feel the need to acknowledge each other as do other makes with a certain brand loyalty. All very tribal. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

I and my colleagues wave to each other all the time in passing. Admittedly it's at a combined speed of about 200mph and its just a fleeting glance, we even turn on the interior lights in the dark so we can see each other waving, sometimes you get all five fingers and other times you only get one or two fingers

I wave to most, but there a LOT of farmers around here who have obviously bought them for the purpose rather than the community. Craig Rogers

Agree with MOG that the concept of waving (not just LR) is probably 25-30 or so years old. Spent a lot of time in MG's as a youngster (late 70's, early 80's) due to family biz but I don't really recall people waving at each other. In the case of the MG's it seemed that as the vehicle moves away from the mainstream and becomes more niche, then the enthusiasts take over and the wave's started. In terms of Landies (Sorry MOG but I know Morris Minors as Moggies so Land Rovers will always be Landies to me) I wonder if it started on the Series models, which have gradually become more enthusiast orientated in the last 20 years or so and this has simply spilt over into Defender owners, many of whom, progressed from a Series, or own both. I even got the odd wave in my old V8 Disco, normally though from another Disco owner, who like me, really wanted a Defender. Tribal?? , brand loyalty?? ......haven't got a clue but whatever the reason is, it's a bit of fun and the kids love joining in, so what the hell. There's enough miserable bar stewards on the roads these days, the odd Defender/MG/Juke/whatever wave is light relief Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

I totally agree. I'm keen to get a 2cv - my mother had one and sold it when i was 5. I bet they like a wave, although pretty rare now. |
