I bought an Exide EA1000 from Tayna Batteries... reasonable price and is excellent.

Since the original battery was from Varta, I replaced mine with Varta recommended AGM battery (595 901 083 – G14). Same size and maintenance free

I have always used Varta on my vehicles, I really can’t fault them.

If funds allow I'd always replace with an Odyssey battery, but failing that the OE battery seems fairly bulletproof in a Defender!

+1 for G14 Varta Start-Stop Plus AGM Car Battery 12V 95Ah (Tayna part 595901085)
Got one, fast cranking, seems great! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

we use this at work
you can then take the info and cross reference it to other makes and brands we have just swapped a 3yr old one that failed under warranty no issue https://batterylookupgb.yuasa.co.uk/ optimas used to be good but ive had both mine fail this year without warning and they live on a ctek charger.so i cant recommend them anymore. anything with 3-5yr warranty seems to last the distance. |

I have replaced with these https://www.tayna.co.uk/leisure-batteries/numax/cxv30hmf/in my Pumas (4 of them) for last 12 years as starters. Still running 3 of them in a 110 and 2 x 90s.
I have also run them in parallel in a winching vehicle for over 10 years, and run them in series (24v) in a competition vehicle. for 8 years. The chap who had the 10 year old batts off me when he bought the car from me (winching vehicle) was on about changing them last weekend, then found it was a wiring fault and not a battery fault! For the folks that went for AGM, was there a particular reason? I have AGM in another car with stop start and I know they are also sealed which is why they are sometime fitted on cars with no stop start but where the battery is somewhere inside the cabin , but normal wet cells are pretty well sealed these days as well and I assume if I am upside down in my 110 I probably have more immediate issues than the battery to deal with .
Just wanted to know if there was another reason like running additional electrics, or fancy setup with another battery for winching etc? There is probably no single reason but I just wanted to see if there was any consensus as I am tight and they are nearly twice as much as the compatible wet cell, even if you go for the improved capacity wet 019s (seems about the same price difference between their premium wet cell and AGM for exide, Yusa and Varta). So I just wanted to justify the extra cost. I appreciate it’s important to have a decent battery but I am not doing much stop start. Although I do do some short journeys it sits round a bit. I suspect it’s just personal preference but wanted to make sure I haven’t missed anything obvious. Thanks! |

The nearest equivelent to the OEM battery is the Varta LFD90 I think. It was discussed at length on here in a previous thread a few years ago.
Regarding AGM, they require a higher charge voltage than flooded batteries to charge properly and I don’t think the Puma alternator goes high enough. I’m sure I read they need 14.7v ideally. The highest I’ve seen from my car around 14.4v 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Cool. Thanks. I saw on this thread a few folks got the Varta AGM so was just interested. Mine still seems to be going ok but it’s done 6 years which isn’t bad going for a car battery so I am carrying jumper pack around just in case but for 100 quid I should probably just change it out.
