Hi all,
I am currently refurbishing my 08 Puma 90 and thought I'd ask what I need to do and/or obtain before the initial start. I am aware I will need to prime the fuel system.. but what is the best apparatus/method for doing this? I am planning to first turn the engine over with fuel lines disconnected to get oil pressure before first start.. will this be OK or could it damage the HP fuel pump? I have just read something about blipping the remote four times after a battery reconnect?? Whats that all about??? I've rebuilt many engines in my time, but surprisingly this is my first Diesel so it's all new to me at the ripe old age of 56!! Thanks for all your replies. Thanks very much Max.
I honestly hadn’t thought of leaving electrical connectors off!! Which is shocking as I used to be a principal engineer at Delphi working on high pressure diesel injector components!! I shall order the Draper fuel pump on Amazon. If I need different connectors I’ll turn them up. Question.. if I leave the return to the fuel cooler disconnected will fuel flow from there indicating the pump is primed? I really don’t want a drop of diesel spilt on my shiny engine!! I had the injectors fuel lines connected and arranged an empty jar under the return of the rail to catch the diesel which will running out while using the pump. When the Diesel was running out and I had the feeling, that there wasn't any air left in the system i reconnected all fuel lines.

Brilliant, thanks.
I wasn’t sure the hand pump would prime the pump AND enable the injectors to spill into the return line. Nige Check out my You Tube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/Defender90KeswickNigelsLandRoverchannel |

I think, made a mistake in my description. The Diesel doesn't run out of the rail, it runs out through the return line, when it is not connected to the rail. Sorry.
Anyway it works. |
