Don't you just love it when a 'routine' saturday afternoon job takes your Landy off the road?
![]() Having smugly removed the TD5's oil filter without much trouble, the 2 bolts on the rotor filter housing seemed a cinch - until one of them did a great impression of a spinning top ![]() So cramped that I needed the Dremel to cut it off Now waiting for an M6 helicoil kit to be delivered, though somewhat scared as I've never used one - is threadlocker a good idea with it? Anyone else had this issue? Pearls of wisdom welcome please ![]() 1998 300TDi Wolf TUM 2015 2.2 Corris Grey 90 2009 2.4 Alaska White 110 Commercial - gone 2006 TD5 Barolo Black 90 - gone 1995 TD5 Green 90 - gone 1984 2.25 Marine Blue 88 |

Cheers, may come to that if the Helicoil fix goes badly!

Very easy to helicoil, and a very common problem. Don't use threadlock with helicoils.

How many td5’s don’t have a nut and bolt? I know mine has.
I thought of a helicoil but it looks as though the housing will have to come off to get good access, so I haven’t bothered. Easier to get the nut on before you fit the screw on filter! |

Helicoiled both mine first time i serviced it. Did it in situe and taped over the filter hole to keep any swarf out whilst i did it. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

Fitting a Helicoil is easy if you have the correct drill, tap and insertion tool. The last time I fitted one (IIRC it was a 2" whitworth ) I was 200 foot up a distillation tower in freezing weather. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |

The only minor issue with the extremely popular nut and bolt solution is that the lower face of the casting, against which the nut will sit, is not perpendicular to the hole, so the nut doesn't sit flat.
This doesn't stop the fix working, but can offend one's engineering principles especially if one is prone to OCD. ![]() In this case, a Helicoil or Timesert threaded insert is the only solution that will allow a good night's sleep. ![]() |

I just tapped a new thread into the old stripped hole. I also wrap the threads on the bolt with Teflon plumbers tape and it helps isolate and prevent the problem from happening.
Nut and bolt are a simple fix, if a bit fiddley when you do change the filter. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris) 2003 Range Rover Mk III (Desmond FitzWilliam) 2000 Defender 110 CSW TD5 (CTX) 1992 Range Rover Classic (Lizzy) 1972 Series III 300 Tdi (Stanwood) 1967 MGB GT Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.
