Why is my oil filter different
Can anybody help? I've got a Defender 90 Td5 XS Station Wagon 2003 MY whicch I've only had it a couple of months. I changed the oil recently and have a problem with getting an oil filter that fits. The problem is that the threaded hole in the filters that I've brought (a Bearmach one from Devon 4x4 and a genuine LR one from Paddock) are too small in diameter and won't screw onto the filter mounting plate. The oil filter is mounted under the exhaust manifold and my local Land Rover Dealer also confirms that the filters supplied are correct and there is only one listing for a Td5 part number - LPX100590R. Well that don't fit on mine mate! Land Rover ownership is beginning to test my patience, Mad so if anyone knows of any mod that may have been made by the previous owner resulting in a larger filter thread can you let me know please. Or did Land Rover just chuck on any old thing thay had left as thay had forgotten to order enough of the right ones?

Have you tried an earlier or a later type oil filter? Might be that at some point you engine may have been replaced. Best way, check your service book, should have the engine number written in it, if its different from the V5 or engine block hey presto its had a new engine. Just a thought Ben

Td5s all take the same filters.

It is a Censored awkward angle to get the filter fitted, might just not be lining up properly.

Have you measured the threaded holes in the new and old filters?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Hi all the filter that is on the car is noticeably bigger with regards to the size of the threaded hole in the top. I've had to put the old filter back on and it went on easily enough. There was no way the new one(s) were going to go on It's definitely a Td5, I replaced the rotor filter no problem and the picctures in the workshop manual look like my engine. Confused

Any progress with this?

FYI the Td5 full-flow filter has a 3/4" UNF 16 tpi thread.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Haven't had a chance to take the old filter off yet but its on the list for Saturday. I'll make sure I measure up the threaded hole in the filter whilst its off and make a note of the number/make this time Embarassed

Me thinks someone has changed something on this one.I have had experience of quite a number of TD5's both in disco and defender never come across this problem. But some times the flow filter can be a Censored to get on. Its never over in my land rover.
