Backlash

I have some backlash on my 300tdi, which is getting worse.
Rear diff, gearbox recon, cv joints front new, props all good.
How much movement should there be up and down, on the transfer box flange where the front prop fits?.

There shouldn't be any but i have always found there is a small amount detectable if you lay underneath and give it a shake. From memory the front output bearing isnt a press fit into the housing but is circliped in, a fractional movement of this feels worse than it is.

The front output shaft is supported at the front end by a single deep-groove ball race and at the rear end by the differential. The ball race is a light drive fit in the casing and is retained by a circlip. The latter is provided because in theory without it there would be nothing to stop the front output shaft from being pulled forwards out of its housing.

A deep groove ball race in good condition should have no axial play and no radial play.

The front output housing also carries one of the two differential taper-roller bearings and is critical in providing the preload on the differential bearings. These do not, however, directly affect the output shaft other than by virtue of the shaft being supported by the diff at the rear end.

If you do have radial movement in the output shaft it is highly likely that you will get an oil leak from the front output shaft oil seal.

If you can feel, rather than see, a hint of movement and have no oil leak, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you can see movement, or if oil is leaking out by the flange, then you probably need to sort it out.

Incidentally up-and-down movement on this flange will not result in driveline backlash. Rotational slop on the flange will, and a very common cause of this is wear in the (really rather primitive) centre diff.

Another issue there is although it is not so likely to suffer as much water ingress on the front. If oil can leak out moisture can get in. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
