United Kingdom 2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Loire Blue
Is my rear diff shot?
Got a 2013 90 with 60k on the clock. The rear drive members and shafts were replaced 5k miles ago as they were shot, but a very audible clunk was still present and it sounds like it is coming from the diff.

To try and diagnose, I have checked he following:
With the wheels on the floor and the handbrake on, there is no movement in the rear prop shaft at all. No great surprise.

With wheels on the floor and in neutral, I get about 20mm of rotation of the handbrake drum.

With the wheels on the floor and in gear, I get exactly the same amount of movement.

With the wheels on the floor and the prop shaft off, I get more or less the same rotation as far as I can see at the diff flange.

What’s next? Anything else to check?

Did the Prop UJ's all seem okay and was the flanges on the transfer box / diff secure?

I'd take a look at the front as well, because sometimes it can seem opposite to the location you think it is.
There is the A frame ball joint too, rear damper bushes etc justto name but a few other posdibities. No Guts, No Glory.

Thanks Steve. UJ have no play at all. Damper bushes are new. A frame I haven’t checked, so will have a look at that as well as the front.

compare the play in the front diff to the rear that will give you some idea what normal is, mine had about 5-10 degree's of free play. a clunk could easily be the adaptor shaft at that mileage, any rust from the intermediate shaft housing? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Thanks. If it were the adaptor, would the wheels being in the floor not prevent the prop shaft from turning? I’ll get under tomorrow and take some pics of how far it is moving and other odds and ends.

Checked a couple more things tonight. Marked up the handbrake drum and then twisted the rear prop shaft with the handbrake off. The result is this much movement:

Then marked the front at the diff end with a line corresponding to the centre of the nut closest to the mark. Rotated and this is the result (the flash has hidden the white mark a bit, but hopefully you can make it out:

I guess what I don’t know is whether this is normal. From what I could see of the a frame, the bushes looked ok, but very hard to tell. When the vehicle sets off, the slack in the drive line is taken up before the wheels start to move by the same degree as the marks dictate above. Similarly, when parked on a slope, hand brake on and foot brake released, it rolls in the direction of the hill by the same amount.

Any thoughts? Is this perfectly normal?!

I have similar levels of play in front & back diffs.

I'm not sure what's the norm so interested in this thread.

there are a couple of threads on here regards diff play some with videos, without witnessing it it is hard to tell, you could drop the oil and see if it has any metal in it (put a strong magnet in the oil flow) if it has gained some play because something has worn out it will result in metal in the oil. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

As far as I know you need to remove either end of both propshafts to check on actual play for diffs and the Lt230. All have a fair amount of play even when new. Puma 110" SW

So play front and rear about the same by the looks of the marks considering drum is further out. I reckon that's the same play as my 78k 90, 51k 90 and 72k 90.

Have you check radius arm bushes? Cheers

I’ll check the radius arm bushes, but how would that account for play in the diff? Or is there actually nothing wrong with how much okay I’m demonstrating?

With the prop shaft removed, there is the same amount of rotation at the diff flange.
