Should I?
Hi all,
I have been thinking of getting a new 110 next year to use for business. I have contacted a dealer I am quite happy with (not my local one) and they have come up with what seems like quite a good deal, but I wanted to get some opinions.

As the vehicle will be doing a lot of towing, is the HD suspension and axle really worth having? Is there a heavy duty clutch option as the dealer seems to think there isn't.

What are they like for corrosion issues? I saw a 3 year old one at work with a rusty back crossmember, is this normal? I would have it undersealed/waxoiled anyway.

What kind of difference does ABS make? I am tempted to have it for safety, can it be specced with HD axles (again, dealer doesn't know for sure)

I have chosen a fairly high spec as I hope to keep it for good, so it would have a few toys, what are they like for reliability, such as electric windows, seats, heated screen, aircon etc.

I don't mind having a bash at fixing my series IIA but its a lot simpler, I take it not much is user-serviceable on the pumas?

Thanks. 2011 110 USW

I have used my 2008 110 SW to tow a triaxle trailer every week, I have never felt it needs any additional support at the rear even when towing the 3.5 ton max.
I would suggest the adjustable slider type tow ball as trailer nose heights differ.

put it this way, the world is supposed to end in December 2012 so the sooner you get a defender the more time you will have to use it.

the puma is the best version todate and the 2013 model will probably not be released until after the end of the world so enjoy a puma, you may get a discount if you ask for a 2 year warranty only Rolling with laughter

Thanks for the advice.
They did tell me the normal vehicle will tow 3.5 tonnes quite happily, I wanted HD spec as I thought it had an uprated clutch...does it? 2011 110 USW

I think it has a heavy duty clutch if you spec HD, along with all 130s?
Not sure if it will last any longer, with the 1st gear on a tdci you never need to ride the clutch, so I am not sure of the benefits?
Would be cheaper to fit a HD when your 1st one wears out at 80 -90000 miles?

Hi Mowcop, where did you get that spec list from, as my dealer wasn't 100% sure of the full spec on the HD kit and the info we had from Landrover was limited.

Thanks. 2011 110 USW

Cheers mate, good to know! Considering all the clutch problems I have been reading about it may be worth it...I intened to keep this truck for good, so I can't have major problems all the time. 2011 110 USW

Something just occurred to me - I specced up my vehicle based on a poverty spec USW, with cold climate pack, comfort pack, body colour roof HD suspension and air con. Might I be better off getting a county? I have no interest in bling add-ons, just wondering about the figures. Does the county have the comfort, cold climate or aircon as standard? 2011 110 USW

Just to say the Cold climate pack rocks! Heated front screen clears increadibly quickly even with quite a lot of ice and the heated seats keep you toasty. Aircon is also very good as I understand the older versions were pants.....

I think in the country these are all addons.... Confused

If I were to buy again i would Deffinatly go for XS again. It costs more but you get the full package, where otherwise you will end up adding extras, which will price it up to just as much (Also the half leather seats are nice Wink )

An Xs is out of our price bracket, and I have no interest in alloys etc. I think also the cold climate pack is only available with cloth seats? 2011 110 USW

Cold climate pack is standard on the XS.

The way I see it:

£2,700 more than a county, and you get:

ABS/ETC (£1157.50)
Metallic Paint (£446.81)
AC (893.62)
Cubby box (£85.11)
Cold climate pack (£374.47)
Leather Steering wheel, part leather seats, side runners, grill and uprated stereo.(Not an option on the other 2)

I would advise 100% on the ABS, AC, Cubby box and Cold climate pack which alone come to 2240.70 without the other luxuries like the seats, side steps, metallic paint etc.

I guess it is hard to get discounts but for example at my dealer they are willing to give me £2,000 off the price of a County and £2500 off a XS so straight away the savings out weigh the specs. Yes it is more money but worth the extra saving before buying.

The XS is a good buy - raises the Defender to "actually quite comfy" level.

I do like the "Brunel" grille too. And heated seats are now an essential IMO, especially after a surf! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
