Do you think a 2.7L or 3.0 L TDV6 engine is an option for a new defender?
I really want a new fender but want a vehicle that'll tow a 2.3 tonne caravan comfortably as well when not going bush? I meet a few blokes who have put in V8 TD, but I want to stick to factory fitted engines having been there before with non standard engines. A chipped 2.7l or 3.0l would suite me just fine. |

This guy pulls 3.5 tonne everyday for a living - he does over 80,000 miles a year with the standard engine hauling boats around, it's what Land Rovers were built for

2.4tdci will pull the 2.3 ton with ease!
i bet neither the 2.7 or the 3l v6 or v8 will go in the new defender around 2013/14 - i would expect something around the freelander range so around a 2.2 Mike |

6 wheel car transporter with a porsche boxter, aprox 2100kg with no problems, well we did smell burning a couple of miles in turns out that one of the wheels (trailer that is) was locked solid, well it was late at night and it wasnt my trailer so i have to admit i just drove the next 20 miles, i guess it must have free'd up at times because it didnt go pop but the defender drove in high range all the was and pulled like normal, if you ignore the smell of burning rubber and the stops to check the trailer tyre, if in dought watch the vid below.

At Christmas I towed a 12 tonne gritter with an 8 tonne load with no problem at all (in a TDCi). I dont see why you need a "chipped 3 litre" to tow a caravan

That'll be nice, as they're 190bhp in current tune, so there's plenty of potential their! |

If the current 2.2 litre engine was used with emissions of 169g/km CO2 , the road tax would be 447 euro per year instead of the current 2,100 euro per year based on the current emissions of the 2.4 tdci engine. If the engine was up to the job it would be a big saving. It would be half of what I pay at the moment as I was lucky enough to register on the last day of the old system calculated on engine cc.I will look at this with interest when the time comes. Then again if the airbag rule comes into force before the new engine it will be academic as the vehicle will not be allowed in. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Hi Landie boy
does your man in Lode Lane know if the 2.2 engine will be coming out at the beginning of 12MY (ie later on this year) or just sometime next year, say Jan - or even for 13MY ? |

thanks Landie Boy
your revelations have made my day ! I was resigned to having to pay € 50000 or so for a new one here in Ireland plus € 2100 yearly for a tax disc but thanks to CR who brought to all of our attention the new EU N1 classification and how it relates to buying a Defender in Ireland(which will knock about 10k off the purchase price here) and your insider information (which will bring the road tax down to € 600 at most) my days in a Mickeymouseubishi Outlander are numbered ! Spudfan I bet you're tempted too ! Bit concerned about this airbag business though. Maybe its all to good to be true. Its like the EU are doing the Good cop bad cop routine as far as Defender ownership is concerned |

ill ask - i would be really surprised if the 2.2 was coming - no one has mentioned it, they are full tilt on the next defender and made the last set of changes specifically not to run the 2.2
that siad - ive not talked old defender for a while now (or asked) Mike |
