Finally got the git off using the filter pliers that arrived last night from Amazon which ain't to bad for the price. Oil everywhere but job done now to attach the new one.

Remember, make sure the old seal came off, smear of oil on the new seal and hand tight is tight enough! I've never had a leak and have always been able to remove by hand the next time.

Have you done the rotor filter too?

I use one of these and I have never had a problem with either removal or tightening the new one.

Is that the filter inside some metal housing with the 2 bolts holding it in place in which case yes and I did the fuel filter. I'll check for the rubber seal thanks for the tip I've not progressed further as I'm waiting for a new drain plug to arrive that isn't rounded off. Thankfully I bought some very handy Irwin bolt extractors a while back.

Works great assuming the last person to maintain it wasn't the Hulk!

With an oil filter on that tight, and a rounded drain plug, Sounds like Djcla's motor was tended to by Thor at it's last service!

I don't trust garages at best of times but it's sure had some abuse when servicing it. The drain plug was in crazy right probably via an impact wrench so figured best get a new one than reusing it. Axle, gear box and transfer oils next as I wonder when or if they were last done.

I was also fighting the filter for long time, also tryied different universal wrenches borrowed from friend. But there is simple working solution: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-TD5-...:rk:8:pf:0 - spanner like this. Easy to use, fast and simple. From fight to loose and tighten, to just few seconds of easy work.
There are two different shapes of the filter end and two different spanners. I have bought both types, just to be sure, when removing the old filter. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I bought one of those to start with but the teeth were a fraction too long and the eBay guy I bought it off said it would only fit genuine filters. I tried filing the teeth down but it just wouldn't grip enough

As I wrote, there are two types of these wrenches. I have bought both, used both, and it works perfect. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Hi Djcla
glad its progressed. I would also check the axle oil and also the transfer box oil and gearbox oil as once there done you know its sorted. What about air filter?
As for changing oils in the gearbox etc always make sure you can loosen the filler plugs prior to draining Thumbs Up
If you do these buy a 5 litre garden sprayer and put oils in that, pump it up and watch it flow Very Happy
Good luck

Cheers bud, air filter is done and the other oils are next on my list but this isn't a cheap task so I'll probably do as and when I can afford it. I also need to figure out what oils to buy.
