dunno if this is related, but i had one of these GT tdi's and the turbos get clogged up quite alot according to a specialist near me. They have a variable vane turbo or something, and it jams open, so it overboosts, and this emissions light comes on. mine used to do it going up hill on the motorway, but if i turned the engine off and on again it would turn off.
Dunno if thats useful or not! |

Find a good independent VW garage, they will sort you out.
Main dealers charge high prices and are generally poor at diagnostics and love charging you for their time - while solving nothing!! Local garages can be great but don't have the specialised knowledge for individual car diagnostics. Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon Discovery 3 HSE BMW 330i Coupe |

Cheers Steve. That's what I think I will do. Unfortunately there are no VW specialists near me, but I don't mind travelling a bit if it gets it sorted out. I'm just hoping that I haven't wasted my money having the throttle body replaced on VW's advice, when that isn't actually the problem, sadly it's looking as though I may have done. I do have a very good local Land Rover specialist! Sadly, I don't think he knows much about VWs.

hi GreenMachine,
I had a 1.9 gt tdi, did over 120k in it .. i had the following problems 1. camshaft - someone put non-VW approved oil in and it wore down the cam lobes 2. rear shocks but the main problem was the turbo hoses kept popping off, my local VW specialist fixed it for me by fitting self tappers into the hoses, like steve d say, find a specialist, have a look on the VW forum for recommendations. if you can't find one, there is a good one in Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire but I'm sure you'll find one closer |

As it's a diesel, the throttle is only there to choke the incoming air for two reasons - to encourage EGR and to prevent shudder when switching off.
The shudder on switch off suggests that the throttle is (still) stuck or jammed open From what I can find the valve looks like this Check that your new one looks new! Check that the plug's been put back on.. Perhaps it needs the fault codes clearing - has the warning light been off at all since the new part was fitted? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Many thanks Martin - you are absolutely right! After the mechanic I took it to fitted the new throttle body, he had been replacing the wrong fuse. I decided to have a look myself after he couldn't resolve the issue and found that the fuse in question had no fuse at all! Just an empty fuse holder. So popped a fuse in, engine died and I thought "Hoorah! That's done it!". No rattle on shut down and the cooling fans working again. A couple of further journeys and the warning light went off on its own, so I am very happy that it is sorted. I have to say that it is with issues like this that the forums really come into their own, with such a vast array of knowledge from a great number of sources, I had some great advice from a couple of members on the Golf forum, and of course from the kind people here!
Defender2 is, of course, the best forum of them all! And we are all very appreciative for all of your efforts! |
