2006 Golf GT Tdi (140) - Problems!
Firstly - profound apologies that this is not Defender related, but I'm in need of some mechanical help and thought someone from my friendly Defender forum might just be able to offer it!

2006 VW Golf GT 2.0 Tdi (140), recently went on a long run down to London and the emissions light came on on the way home. Took it to local VW dealer for diagnostics and they decided it needed a new throttle body and also advised that the cooling fans were replaced as a precautionary measure, total cost £980. So, asked around on the VW forums and was told by some helpful chaps that the throttle body is a common problem and easy to replace. Having not used any garage other than the main dealer before, I was advised by friends / family to go to a local garage that has a good reputation. It's been in there today and had a new throttle body fitted, but the emissions warning light is still on.

The only symptom of this problem is a fairly severe shake / rattle when switching the engine off, otherwise it seems completely normal. Needless to say, said rattle is as evident as ever following the throttle body replacement. If I go back to VW I face another bill of minimum £65 for further diagnostics, if I go back to the guy it's been with today I could just be forking out more money and getting no further. Alternatively I could try to find an independent VW/Audi specialist to take it to, but would have to look much further afield. Bl**dy cars hey?

Any help / advice greatly appreciated! Cheers Thumbs Up

dunno if this is related, but i had one of these GT tdi's and the turbos get clogged up quite alot according to a specialist near me. They have a variable vane turbo or something, and it jams open, so it overboosts, and this emissions light comes on. mine used to do it going up hill on the motorway, but if i turned the engine off and on again it would turn off.

Dunno if thats useful or not!

Find a good independent VW garage, they will sort you out.

Main dealers charge high prices and are generally poor at diagnostics and love charging you for their time - while solving nothing!!

Local garages can be great but don't have the specialised knowledge for individual car diagnostics.

Cheers Steve. That's what I think I will do. Unfortunately there are no VW specialists near me, but I don't mind travelling a bit if it gets it sorted out. I'm just hoping that I haven't wasted my money having the throttle body replaced on VW's advice, when that isn't actually the problem, sadly it's looking as though I may have done. I do have a very good local Land Rover specialist! Sadly, I don't think he knows much about VWs.

hi GreenMachine,

I had a 1.9 gt tdi, did over 120k in it .. i had the following problems

1. camshaft - someone put non-VW approved oil in and it wore down the cam lobes
2. rear shocks

but the main problem was the turbo hoses kept popping off, my local VW specialist fixed it for me by fitting self tappers into the hoses, like steve d say, find a specialist, have a look on the VW forum for recommendations. if you can't find one, there is a good one in Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire but I'm sure you'll find one closer

As it's a diesel, the throttle is only there to choke the incoming air for two reasons - to encourage EGR and to prevent shudder when switching off.

The shudder on switch off suggests that the throttle is (still) stuck or jammed open

From what I can find the valve looks like this

Check that your new one looks new!
Check that the plug's been put back on..

Perhaps it needs the fault codes clearing - has the warning light been off at all since the new part was fitted?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Many thanks Martin - you are absolutely right! After the mechanic I took it to fitted the new throttle body, he had been replacing the wrong fuse. I decided to have a look myself after he couldn't resolve the issue and found that the fuse in question had no fuse at all! Just an empty fuse holder. So popped a fuse in, engine died and I thought "Hoorah! That's done it!". No rattle on shut down and the cooling fans working again. A couple of further journeys and the warning light went off on its own, so I am very happy that it is sorted. I have to say that it is with issues like this that the forums really come into their own, with such a vast array of knowledge from a great number of sources, I had some great advice from a couple of members on the Golf forum, and of course from the kind people here!

Defender2 is, of course, the best forum of them all! And we are all very appreciative for all of your efforts! Thumbs Up
