1999 Defender 110 2.5 TD CSW Bonatti Grey

Electric Cooling Water pump

Hello

Has anyone fitted an electric cooling water pump system like the Davies and Craig system?

From the reports I've read, it will allow the engine to operate at the right temperature from start up quicker and the system only works at a flow the engine requires at that moment, hopefully improving mpg by not having the constant drag for the mechanical water pump.

Any ideas?

Would the heater still work?? 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Hi

Yes it should, if the pump is not running, then convection current flow should still flow to the heater because it will be cooler than the engine and the cold air flowing past the heater element should also help.

If you are looking at improving mpg, then electric fan should be the first change, that uses more power than the electric pump.

I do like the idea of heating using the residual heat from the engine. Augusto

I will need to remove and fit an electric fan which will improve the mpg, the electric water pump controller will also switch the fans on.

Easiest way to improve MPG is change Defender for another car. Improvement like electric cooling pump will make the car less reliable. Standard proper working fan has nearly no influence on engine - with running engine it is just barely rotating - it is possible to stop it with a finger. If not, than it is stuck and needs replacement. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

Hello MadTom

Like everyone here, I choose to drive a Defender at every opportunity and have always wondered how can I improve my defender.

An electric water pump should be reliable, after all the heater motor and cooling fans are electric and I've never had to replace either of them on any of my cars.

Failure of heater fan = no heating, but not cooked engine.
Cooling fan - standard are belt driven, electric powered is the fan for A/C, failure of A/C fan = no A/C or lower A/C power, but not cooked engine, failure of cooling fan (belt driven) = probably big problem like broken belt or punctured water cooler.
Broken electric water pump - probably cooked engine, or at least towing the car home.
In average temperatures, it is not a problem, but my experience with using heavy Discovery od Defender with TD5 engine and travelling into mountains of south Europe in hot summer, the original belt driven fan has huge power, when fully engaged, it is like starting helicopter next to the car. It is not comparable to any "standard" electric powered fan. We had one car with electric fan, and it was not enough, after 2 days of problems with overheating, we managed locally an used belt driven fan, and all was fine. The belt driven fan is kicking only occasionally, but the cooling effect is much bigger when needed. Many thanks for sharing your experiences with me, it makes a lot of sense.

I am yet to travel that far and in such hot conditions, the last thing I want to do is create a vehicle that does not perform hence asking on a forum.
