Disco 3/4 gearbox
Will a disco 3/4 gearbox fit our td5?

The s6-53 as its called is a six speed, really a 5 speed with a granny first.

I feel it would be a great fit for my revs with a 1.2 transfer case ratio. Great crawler and even tower.

I have the td5 bellhousing, probably toss it in the trunk and head off to the junk yard and loom for some disco 3/4 and compare.

My only problem is all the discos here are petrol and not diesel

Did you made some calculation with the overall transfer ratios? I think, overdrive and slower gears in transfer box (or in diffs) is much simpler solution (= working and cheaper). "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Madtom,

I already have the OD, and the V8 fifth gear...

But those are not the problems. 1-3 are my problem...

My throttle is heavy in starting the roll, and keepin up with slow traffic...

On our Discovery 2 I have changed standard tires 235/70/R16 to much bigger 235/85/R16. With stock gearing, and heavy car, it was terrible to drive - especially 1st and 2nd gear. I have changed stock diff ratio 1:3,54 to 1:3,8 gears from KAM. With slight engine remap, it is again nice to drive car. I was surprised, how big the improvement is.

There is nice tool for fast calculation on gear/RPM/speed on Ashcroft web. My gearing is still a bit faster than standard, but not so much. And it was the key - I think the original gearing is OK.

For 130 I have prepared overdrive and the calculation looks nice 255/85/R16 tyres, 1:3,8 gears in diffs, standard gearbox, 1:1,4 transfer box and overdrive. For city use, the gearing will be a bit slower, and with overdrive a bit faster than the stock. And stock gearing is nice for me, but only up to 100kmh. For higher speed, the overdrive will be much better. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I hear ya, and up to 110 the TC oil temps are great. Once i get over 120kph the temp raises steadily.

I ran syn 75/90 and it hot 250F, until i slowed and the temp dropped.

I am now runnin redline light weight oil and it seems to do the trick in keepin the iil temp down.

The MT82 and zf s6-53 are good gearboxes, but they need the TC swapped to 1.2 to run the higher gears properly.

Drove my friends puma and the ratios felt good for traffic. First was crap but it would help when towin.

I’d maybe speak to Ashcroft’s I know they’ve made a few different versions of the Ford box and D3.
