I replaced my stub axles last weekend because they where worn and now the rear diff is leaking, so i'm guessing it's worn too.
Rather than refurbishing the old one, I am pretty much set on getting an LSD of some variety. Any recommendations? My 200 Tdi isn't going to see heavy offroading as it's more of a restoration project. if you're not going to be doing any heavy offroading then beefing up the diff will probably be a bit of a waste
I've always wanted to fit a Detroit TruTrack if my diff ever goes. It's totally automatic and mechanical, so fit and forget. No need to tell it went to lock, no need for an air compressor and a bit cheaper than an air locker. Will make a big difference in the snow... although I've been advised not to fit one in the front as it makes wet roundabouts a bit... I ran a Detroit locker in the rear and a tru track in the front of my 100" and they were ace, self centering steering was brilliant, and I even ran to France and back with a 1 tonne trailer and a broken rear half shaft - only came to light as the parked me on a ramp for the crossing and the handbrake started to fail when the sea got rough!

Nigel has been around for a while doing lots of good work ( 'hybrid from Hell' on lr4x4), he used to work for KAM and may still have ties with them. His work is good as is mega squirt stuff.
Personally though i would go with Ashcrofts, after 15years of challenge competing and last 3years at Ultra4 you can see the benefit of going with a company that specialise in transmission components and stand by their products for 5 years warranty. I think he's an Ashcroft dealer, I've left my email very open ended to see what he recommends 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

I can highly recommend Nigel @ Xcess4x4 his attention to detail is insane.
I would go for the Ashcroft ATB if you're set on fitting an LSD, much better than a trutrac in my opinion. I would expect Nige to recommend the same or perhaps a 4 pin instead. |

A 4 pin is an open diff but stronger than original, it has additional planet gears that increase the strength and were fitted in the rear of V8 90's or special vehicles.

Just to throw another name into the pot how about a Quaife torque sensing diff, I have run one of these for over 200k now with just one rebuild after about 150k where Quaife supplied me with the wearing parts foc.

Quaife's are also 4x the price of the Ashcroft unit so for a vehicle that isn't used heavily then its probably a bit overkill.

Just to make something clearer: A Tru trac is a limited slip diff based on the priciple that a wormwheel can drive a cogwheel but a cogwheel cannot drive a wormwheel. It is still a limited slip as it transfer about 3 times the torque off the spinning wheel to the wheel with grip. A wheel in the air has zero grip so 3 x 0 = still 0
A Detroit locker is locker so all torque goes to the wheel with grip. I have a Detroit locker in the rear axle and a tru trac in the front and yes you can feel the Detroit in the rear but I love it. I use my 90 on the road and off-road.
