Why not buy the Ashcroft product from Ashcroft’s? Their service and warranty are excellent and have been around and will continue to be for a long time to come. I’ve always found Dave to be more than helpful.

Nige hasn't all of a sudden become the expert on diffs. He's been around a long time, I'm not sure exactly how long because fundamentally (I'm not that old to have been around long enough for when he started) but before he went it alone he worked for Kam so has been in the game a long time.
I can only offer my experience and relate those of friends but my (and it is my personal view and I'll be up front in that I consider him a mate) is that Ashcrofts do make a bloody good product and most of my drivetrain is by them. However to actually build the diff into a final drive unit I'd always use and recommend Nige. His level of fastidiousness and OCD when assembling stuff is in a different league and to boot a great laugh when you actually meet him. I've yet to hear a complaint about him other than it takes a while but he is a one / two man band. I haven't heard many bad things about Ashcrofts but I have heard things, but then again they're a much bigger business than Nige so have more overheads and consequently have to be slightly more aggressive (probably the wrong word) in dealing with issues. They also have the luxury of largely having a captive market as they don't really have any competitors. Nige doesn't really have that luxury because his business relies on his reputation and quality of work, that gets tarnished and that's it. I wouldn't have said he's a competitor to Ashcrofts but rather a supplement since he builds Ian's products into a lot of his work. Ashcrofts will quite happily install a diff for you but Nige can offer a lot more based off real world experience he's gathered. Have a look for his "TabLock" system, yes extreme but born out of a requirement from people pushing the limits of what a Land Rover drivetrain can cope with. The "Superflange" he developed offers is another very worthwhile addition that protects the pinion seals, which isn't offered by others. Sorry that turned out a bit longer than I intended... Having dealt with both, I’d be buying, and taking advice from Nige.

Sorry guys but I am not a specialist but I have rebuild diffs on the kitchen table.
Click image to enlarge The milages mentioned before don't tell me anything. Lifetime mentioned in months. My True trac was installed first in my CT Disco in 2003 for the rear axle. Then I wanted a locker so in 2004 I bought a Detroit locker. The True Trac moved to the front axle. When I swapped my CT Disco for my 90 in 2009 I also swapped the diffs so the same diffs are now in the 90. The tru trac never gave any problems not even when CV joints and halfshafts had enough off it. So this one has done about 130 000 km by now over the 15 years. The Detroit (like any real locker) does not like breaking halfshafts and the first one was replaced within half a year and the second one was rebuild by myself in 2012 with other second hand parts. I am running Aschroft half shafts and CV's now so I don't expect any problems anymore. My diffs are not pegged. Maybe I should have but till now I only lost teeth on a crownwheel ones and I run 35"Simexes when off-road. Another vote for Nige... not because of some kind of hype but just because I've had a fantastic build done by him and it's got a nice personal touch too.
I had an Ashlocker built pegged, HD this and that, yada yada... I have a trutrac up front and thats a very nice thing too. But yes you won't get much out of it with a wheel in the air although you can trick it by braking a bit and pulsing throttle if you're really stuck. It's ideal if you don't want the hassle of running an air system. |
