Hi.
I decided to start a new thread on this. Could anybody explain to me what is (or would be) the advantage of using 5W30 oil over 5W40 or 5W50? In my understanding the later two should be better, especially in hot climate. But LR, unlike in the Td5, recomends just 5W30, no matter the weather. it's not just any 5w30 oil, it has to be a WSS-M2C-913 C/D engine oil spec.
the engine was designed for this oil spec, using anything else may lead to problems in the long run. we also have very warm weather here in ZA, but so far the Ford spec oil has worked well. I have been using the Fuchs brand for about 8 years now, and my Puma runs very smoothly and no issues whatsoever, no oil between services either. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged

Modern synthetic oils cope far better with wider temperature ranges than the older mineral oils.
Land Rover and Ford would have tested the engine in a range of climates, both on a test dyno and in real world scenarios. Everywhere from the artic circle to the Middle East. Along with various different oils. |

It is worth noting that the main requirement of the Ford spec oil for 2.4 Puma (913B) is its fuel economy properties. If you don’t mind sacrificing a small % in economy there is no harm in using other high quality 5w30s. In fact, the very best quality oils in terms of engine protection may not meet that Ford standard because they don’t have the fuel saving properties. For advice on this I would strongly recommend a chat with Opie Oils. I had a tuned Focus ST that called for the same Ford spec as the Puma, but they recommended a much better Fuch oil that didn’t meet the Ford approval.
Once you get to the 2.2, the required oil spec was changed to protect the DPF and in those vehicles it is more important to choose an oil that meets Fords requirements I think. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

A search for that spec of oil on Opie oils website doesn’t list it as a Land Rover spec. It’s M2c-925 The oil in mine is from Opie oils and is listed under there list for a TD5 as I used my reg to search for engine oil |

The spec for Puma engines is WSS-M2C-913-D (the D suffix means low ash for cars with a DPF, but it's also fine with earlier 2.4's)
M2C-925 may well be the correct spec for a TD5, but as Bergos has a puma it's the Ford spec above. The owners handbook for the late Puma's actually just says it should be 'SAE 5w30' and they recommend Castrol (Castrol branding will be part of their supply deal) |
