It was not on a lift when he did it and the clutch was new and didn't make a noise.

He did switch between reverse and forward and going through different rpm's. I guess that since there was basically no load on the shaft, a worn shaft could start to vibrate and even resonate which possibly could be detected. But since he didn't hear anything and I haven't inspected mine, this is not a reliable data point.

In any case:
1, vehicle year of manufacture: 2007
2, engine type 2.4
3, is the Defender still running with the original output shaft? (Y/N): Yes, as far as I know
4, vehicle milage at first shaft failure, or current milage on the original shaft if still running.

I find it quite remarquable, that there was - in fact - some sort of knocking sound when I was in the Alpes mountains mounting serpentine roads with changing rpm and many many load changes, too. The knocking occured in non loaded situations in 180° curves.

I've never been able to reproduce that sound.

But, the very same day, the spline failed 2...3 hours later. And it did not fail under load but driving down a 180° curve. When I wanted to réengage the clutch after the curve, the spline didn't have any more contact. I had the truck towed by another 4x4

That strange knocking sound came from the drivetrain and it began a few days before, but occasionally. I concluded that - once @home - I had to check the drivetrain what I've never done and even forgotten after the installation of the new spline.
