is that a little like building a crane using hessian rope rather than steel but supplying it with a trampoline just in case the hessian gives way?

think we forgot the crappy front diff fitted to some models
the Seat Belt bracket bolts on some 2010/11 models oil pump issues on 2.2s but we all still love them and they are currently still strangely going up in value DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Don't be put off, they're great vehicles and we love them (it's just a pity there were so many unnecessary mistakes). Every journey is an adventure in a Defender.
Breakdown and recovery insurance is great for peace of mind, it must be said. There is also a lot of great people on this forum who are happy to help (and to scare the bejasus out of you, of course)! |

Thanks Blackwolf. I have always wanted one and definitely plan to keep it forever…just wasn’t aware there were so many issues!! So far so good - had it nearly a year and nothing has broken yet! Drives pretty well actually. I’ll post some pics in due course.

probably/hopefully both brackets to catch wheels as they fall off. trampolene for catching the crane's load as the rope breaks did I mention I bought a transit van? while cleaning it the other day it occurred to me how practical it is in almost every way and it got me thinking about the defender. yes the defender is far more capable in the snow / mud BUT I had to ask myself - what would I prefer - to get stuck or to breakdown? I'm luck to have the choice I guess - although things as they are I don't believe I've gotten close to 500 miles in the defender over the last 12 months |

500 miles .... so you've only used about four gallons of fuel in your Defender then!

What a positive thread
There are two factors that the survey does not take into account. Driving conditions and style. Off-road vs on-road will have a massive impact. The additional torque off-road driving places on the shaft. One mile off-road equals many many more in the smooth black stuff. Also driving styles. Not just when changing gears but are individuals pre-torquing the drivetrain when off-roading for example? I believe these two factors are more of a contributor than alignment issues. |

come to think of it I might not have put any fuel in during the year on the basis that I typically get 500 miles from a tank |

I'd love to agree with you. While you're not wrong I've had two failures plus if my memory serves me right a 3rd replaced at the time of a clutch replacement (or gearbox or transferbox - can't quite remember) - but anyway although I've now done in excess of 100k miles I'd suggest there's unlikely to be another defender out there thats been treated more gently ie very little towing and largely slow motorway cruising (hence managing 40mpg average on a tank). So while your theory is correct I'm inclined to suggest there is a fundamental issue other than driving style. |

mine had a very easy first 20k miles and 2 shafts, neither failed but both on the way, now on my 3rd this one is Ashcroft so time will tell. Coincidently both Caterham and mine are 2011 DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

1, vehicle year - 2011
2, engine type 2.4 3, is the Defender still running with the original output shaft? No 4, vehicle milage at first shaft failure, or current milage on the original shaft if still running - 52,000 Was having a LOF clutch kit fitted, so opted to get the Ashcroft Output shaft at the same time. Here are some pics (note I’ve done 34k of the 52k miles and while it’s extremely well looked after, it has a BAS tune and is driven hard).
