Hi think Nige has done a Sterling job with this video on this subject.

- Perhaps, if you had a vehicle that is badly misaligned, you could set it up on the bolts and clock it in true, then remachine one set of dowel holes to keep it that way.

Yes, that's a nice vidéo. Of course, everbody knows that the grease cannot be confined inside the spline with a rubber seal. It must be renewed - Unfortunately this cannot be done easily (because one cannot access that spline within 5...10 min or so. That's why I cannot accept Nige saying the output shaft is "good design". Land Rover engineered it badly. I appreciate the solutions trying to help us out (LOF, Ashcroft) and had the Ashcroft kit installed. And I'm hoping that in near future somebody comes up with the perfect solution ! |

Great video by Nigel.
Could have checked for angular misalignment by placing the dial gauge on the mating face of the tcase. But parallel misalignment is probably more at play. Wonder if the same measurement can be done with the tcase in situé, by removing the tcase input gear, mounting the dial gauge on the intermediate shaft itslef, and use the lt230 input gear rear opening as reference. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I don't see why not, but I'd try to use the rear bearing outer race rather than the transfer box opening. It might even be possible to check with reference to both front and rear bearing races. One try at the next opportunity I think. |

Have a clutch and an intermediate shaft replacement planned for a 2.4... so will try to measure it out. I think if can measure both input gear races then can determine not only parallel misalignment, but also angular misalignment.
Edit, pity that have no history of the intermediate shaft for that vehicle. The odometer stands at 150kmiles. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

2, 2.2 3, No 4, First shaft replaced at 54'000 miles as preventative maintenance. Had some life left in it but grease had dried away. Replaced with LOF one piece. Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭 Last edited by Angus_Beef on 15th Jul 2021 8:15am. Edited 1 time in total |

2, 2.4 3, N 4, Unknown mileage but shaft previously replaced with std LR one. Replacement had signs of wear and no grease. Now replaced with Ashcroft unit as precautionary. 5, Per 4 for first failure, but yes now. 6, 63,100 current mileage (Ashcroft fitted 62,619). |

2. 2.2 3. Yes, original shaft 4. No failure, 69,000 miles (111,000km) but shaft is very worn. Shaft not secured by locking ring and fell out when transfer box removed. Some evidence of lubrication on splines but not sure if this was grease from factory or slight leak from gearbox rear seal. 5. Fitted LOF 1 piece shaft. All back together with new LOF Powerspec clutch and no backlash whatsover . Now have to learn a new driving style to compensate. Should have done this long ago. Interesting to see Richard Hammond having the issue but putting it down to the Bowler Stage 2 kit fitted:

LOF extreme output shaft all the way
Would be great if Hammond stripped it, and filmed the retrofit to an LOF on his channel, and feels all of our pain whilst doing so |

Surely this is just a bit of journalistic embellishment for the sake of a feature? If the shaft fails due to fretting, and loads of us are running similar power & torque on our TDCI's, I can't believe he's somehow stripping the splines on a regular basis? I would also think Bowler are well aware of the Ashcroft and LOF solutions in this space. While happy to point it out, in general I don't have huge problem with this sort of story making in shows 'like' TopGear. The are entertainment shows after all, and the technical detail isn't allowed to get in the way of a good story.... Nice car though, I might have a look at some of his shows just to see his nice 110 |

Well if Bowler have a social media manager, then maybe they should get on to him and get the real facts out there.
Of course, that might now be difficult with the JLR ownership - as who are they going to point the finger at? |

Has anyone noticed a marked improvement in their fuel efficiency since upgrading to a new single piece LOF Extreme Output shaft?
Since having upgraded to a LOF power clutch and an LOF Extreme output shaft I have consistently noticed that my Puma 90 is getting an extra 30-40km per tank. Apart from gearbox and transfer box oil changes at the same time, I can't explain why my fuel efficiency has improved. Has anyone else noticed this having done the LOF upgrades? |
