Mystery Button
Hi, I have just bought my first Defender which i love. i bought if from a Lady Who's husband had unfortunately died so the handover wasn't thorough.
i have been unpicking bits and bats, lights, fog lights, spots remote control lights etc etc but there is a mystery button on the dash, when you press it it goes green. i cant see anything that obviously happens when the button is green...
i know it could be anything, but can anyone suggest what it may be?
any answers gratefully recieved

Without a bit more detail it really could be anything from a winch isolator to a rear view camera, neither of which may no longer be fitted.. If you can post some pictures of the button and the vehicle generally then that may give more of a clue. Darren

I wonder if it could be an ignition bypass, allowing you to remove the key with the engine running.

Ha....I have a very similar thing on my car on the steering column! I took mine in for some work yesterday and put that on the list so if they find out what it is I'll let you know Very Happy

why would you do that? wouldnt you lock up the steering, among other dangerous things?

Yes, that's the idea, it allows you to leave the car unattended with the engine running while using lights/power etc, or just while warming up outside the house, the steering lock would render the vehicle virtually immobile.

I added my own version to a D3 I had, I linked it to the brake switch to disable the bypass and turn off the engine if the brake was pressed.

Immmobile or not, if on a public highway or space though that would be illegal. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Rule 123

You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

As said, could literally be anything! Obvious question but are there any aftermarket electricals on the vehicle? Like work lights, beacon etc

I suggest tracing the wiring. Whip off the fusebox lid under the steeling column (two quarter turn fasteners) and position your head down in the footwell looking up, see whether you can see any 'aftermarket' wiring

Some utility company Defenders had them when fitted with a power take off, or hydraulic winch. So the keys could be kept safe while the operators were doing their stuff around/near the vehicle. So the vehicle wouldn't be running 'unnecesarily' or 'unattended'.

As for the green switch, this is just a generic after market switch, it could be for anything. All any of us can do is throw in random guesses, You'll just have to trace the wires and see where they go unfortunately.
