Changing piston cooling jets

Hi

Does anybody know (or knows somebody who knows) if the piston cooling jets can be changed by only removing the sump or does the crankshaft needs to be removed as well?

Asking this as I'm always been paranoid about developing the PCJ issue, since my car is one of the early ones. Although for now the engine seems to work fine, aside from very slight ticking when the engine is cold, I would change the jets if the work could be done without removing the crankshaft.

I believe that the sump and the ladder frame stiffener thingy need to be removed and I have a feeling that the latter cannot be be done with the engine in the vehicle. I don't know this from first hand experience though and may be mistaken.

I'll be interested to see what other replies you get.

Looks tight without removing the Crankshaft!

No other useful info that I can see in the manual though.

Looking at those pics I'd say it's possible, although you'd need to rotate the crank to get access to each one.

Thanks everybody for sharing your thoughts. I took another look at the manual and I think that Blackwolf is right in that the ladder fame has to come off as well. I also first looked at the picture that BenB8man shared, that got my hopes up, that perhaps the change can be done by simply removing the sump and rotating the counterweights out of the way, but it seem that the ladder fame has an oil baffle plate that is the way.

There was a recall on this in about 2008. It said remove assembly and fit new. Merlin

The recall replaced the whole engine, not the PCJs, because you only found out you had faulty PCJs when your engine destroyed itself.

It wasn't actually a recall anyway because you only got a new engine if (1) your engine was destroyed as a result of the defective PCJs and (2) you asked for one and (3) both 1 and 2 happened before a cut-off date (which was 2011 or 2012 if memory serves). Otherwise you ended up paying many thousands for a new engine yourself.

Sadly typical of JLR.
