Help from any Boat People
Trying to help my uncle, who has a Petrol Volvo Penta Engine in his boat, and needs to adjust the ignition timing on the distributor, which needs a clamp bolt released.

According to the manual this requires a Volvo special tool P/N 888863. The problem he has been having is getting hold of this tool, either to purchase or borrow.

Does anybody know where to get one, or a work around whereby the tool isn't needed. From what he has told me the space is very restricted and awkward to get to, hence why he has struggled so far to get something else to fit.

It's basically a 90° hex head tool with a hole drilled in it. Could probably make one by machining a standard Allen key?

Here is a picture pulled from google Thumbs Up

Is that of any use? Contains dimensions of the tool too Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

How on earth did you find that information, he has been searching for weeks, and found nothing.

Very helpful, thank you very much.

No problem, just did a quick Google search with the part number and Volvo penta key words, as Ian says tamper proof Allen keys would do it. Just make sure they have similar dimensions Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Are metric Allen keys close enough to use? As the manual says 7/32 hex Confused 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thank you for all your help.

The biggest problem my uncle was having was that due to the restricted access, he can't get standard security bits in, tried cutting a few down to fit, but without being 100% sure that the trial ones were the right size, he didn't want to try and get the clamp bolt undone, and do any damage to the head, as from the way he describes its location it would most likely then be an engine out job to be able to get enough access to get the bolt out by other means.

Shocked
That sounds like Volvo really thought about what they were doing with that!
By the sounds of it, it would be worth replacing with a normal bolt once you get it out. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

According to Google it was done for Californian emissions law. It has to be set at the factory and tamper proof.

Our ATV was the same. Had to drill the brass plugs out of the carb to adjust the mixture - the dealer said that if it was running poorly due to carb adjustment then it was a new carb job Shocked needless to say 5 minutes with a drill saved a few hundred quid Whistle 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Sadly you won't be able to tinker with anything in a few years, the way things are going.... Big Cry

The other day, I was explaining to a young lad at work how a points ignition system worked,
He looked at me bemused, and said it sounds way to complicated Rolling Eyes

I showed him how you would set the points, he just said "it's easier when you can just plug it in to an ECU"
And "we're all old cars like that" Laughing

A lot of two stroke equipment is now factory set, like you say.

Times a changin Rolling Eyes 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
