Good grief... looks like it has been welded...
To begin with try some heat and the LR special Tool No.1 (lump hammer) to see if you can free up the hub. Is that the front or rear hub? If rear you should be able to pull out the hub and half shaft together as one. This is obviously not possible with the front CV/shaft assembly. |

WOW...The Drive Flange and Shaft look to be in a 'well advanced stage of corrosion'... I would first try a combination of heat and 'light impact' both in line with the Drive Shaft and rotational to try and free up the apparently 'fused' state of the Flange...to hopefully allow the Drive Flange to be withdrawn. Both Drive Flange and Shaft look to need replacing (just this corner or is this typical... ) If you can free the Flange just enough you may be able to get behind it with some sort of extractor... If this is at the rear then both the Flange and Drive Shaft could be extracted 'as one'... Not the same but this was to remove the Hub / Disc assembly (Front)...when the Drive Flange had been removed. That's been welded.
If it is the front, you have no option but to cut the weld off with a grinder or cutting disc. You'll need a new flange and CV joint to reassemble plus sundry parts like the circlip. If it is the rear, the flange and halfshaft should come out welded together, and functionally will be little different to the single-piece halfshafts used on the runout models. At the rear, you could simply reuse the welded assembly, or you can replace with new halfshafts and flanges. |

Both mine were like that, had to have them cut off , lots of new bits.

It's the front, haven't looked at the rears although i'm going to have to after this.
Other side isn't as bad but it's still not pretty, still likely to have a chance of removal though. Have ordered new CV / Flanges for both sides, swivel rebuild kits, bearings and a few other bits. i'll have missed some stuff but won't know the state until it comes apart and i can reassess. Atleast i'm not alone and someone elses needed cutting off. |

Can't you just pull the drive member off together with the drive shaft (which should just slide out) then replace both?

It's the front axle, so the shaft has the CV on the inboard end.

I think you are right...now I look again...(my brain just didn't go there... ) Well that's one way to 'take up' the play, on Drive Shafts...i'd be checking there wasn't sawdust in the Axles too faced with that. One more reason to take off your drive flanges and grease them, only takes 20 minutes to do and saves a lot of grief later on.

First half of the battle won, drive flange is off, luckily it wasn't welded. Resorted to 1mm cutting disc on the grinder.
Now whats the betting the nut behind is going to be equally stubborn? |

I have never seen an un-welded one that has looked so welded! Still, that is good news, your vehicle may just be suffering from neglect rather than butchery. |

I checked mine a couple of months ago. One rear had a cap full of powder so needed a new driveshaft and drive member, the other needed a drive member, both front splines were dry but serviceable.
None of them were near to failure though. |

I imagine one previous owner lost the circlip and had a welder to hand.
And then I just read not welded |
