Puma 2.2 2015 swivel housing seals
Hi just had defender into main dealer for warranty work. Replaced o/s front swivel housing seal. Got a friend of mine (who is a trained mechanic and mot inspector) to take a look underneath and he reasons the n/s is also weeping but more importantly that the dealer has put the o/s seal on back to front with spring showing.

Is it possible for them to make the mistake of putting the new seal in back to front? Just asking before I express my dissatisfaction at the dealers?

Comments greatfully appreciated Idea .

There are a lot of 'mechanics' that I wouldn't trust to sit the right way around on a toilet seat.

So yes, perfectly feasible that they could make such an error.

In my experience of main dealers, there are very few who are real specialists in Defenders. Come to think of it, there were very few who were actually interested in Defenders - even selling them. Be interested to learn if the seal has been fitted back to front.

if the spring is showing it's definitely around the wrong way. You'll be able to confirm that to them by showing them the other side which wont have the spring showing.

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't trust the dealership to make me a cup of tea. However the main dealer who knows and cares about Defenders is an hours drive and this one is only 20 mins. Just thought that a new front bumper, an inter cooler grille replacement - both corroded, couple of rubber seals and a swivel seal wouldn't be a massive challenge.

It obviously is!

Trouble is I suppose I will have to go back to them rather than to my preferred dealer to get the other seal looked at and the existing one rectified. In hindsight I should have just gone up to Lakes and my preferred dealer.

I've had some "discussions" with my dealer (located 100 miles away, btw) about swivel seals. The trouble stems from the design allows a small amount of weep, so it's a question of degree. That said this, your n/s is beyond acceptable weep, in my view. Certainly, if the grease is dripping off the hub, it's time to replace. Your o/s looks wrong to me, but at least they replaced the retaining ring, sometimes the rusty old one gets refitted!

Usually, my dealer comes around to my point of view, if I press the matter. Current Steeds:
2015 110 UW in Grasmere Green
2003 BMW F650 the Hack
2000 Elise
1992 Ducati 888 (no longer in bits, yahoo)
1990 TDR 250 (in bits again)
1988 TDR 250 (no longer in bits) and for sale

Dealer arranged collection with driver same day and it's back with them. Poor of a main dealer to sign the work off in the first place. Anyway let's see how it comes back!
