Finally got the ultimate period correct 'factory upgrade' wheels and tyres for it now courtesy of a guy at work.
7.50 XCL's. Good enough for the launch cars, Camel Trophy and the MOD, good enough for me Click image to enlarge The contact patch is sooo narrow, more so than the XZL's. No wonder they are good in mud. Click image to enlarge Made a great howl going along the road too Next job won't be cosmetic, will either be replace the rusted out battery box or a suspension refresh. Thinking about the former, likely get a YRM ally box, does the whole seatbox need to come out to remove old/fit new? Probably, mine was out anyway so can't say for sure.
Try and remove the old one with the seat box inplace, if it works all the better. The LRM one is good 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned. 1989 Ninety 200tdi - Love it - Second best car I have ever owned. 1951 80" Series 1 - Love it - Third best car I have ever owned. |

So I've started the battery box replacement job. You can see why I don't think Mr.MOT man would be too understanding of its condition. I'm trying to do it with the seat box in situ, I've drilled all the rivets and its basically loose now, but I'll have to get heavy handed with the grinder to actually get it out. Hoping the new aluminium one goes in relatively easily due to being in 4 pieces, but we shall see. I plan on etch priming, painting and seam sealing the new one as it goes together.
Click image to enlarge So far the hardest bit of the job was removing the old seats, they are the old style runners held in with 8x cross head screws, which were naturally all seized. Stud extractor made light work of shearing their heads off, but I've now got the captive nut plates out too so have removed the remnants of the screws ready for reassembly with the new seats. Click image to enlarge Took the tunnel off to investigate the stuck low range mech. Something must be seized in the box so further investigation required. Also I initially thought the difflock mech worked because the lever moved freely, however now I can see there is loads of movement at the pivot bush on the side of the tbox so its not actuating the difflock itself. Perhaps that's seized too and forcing the lever has worn the pivot bushes out? Click image to enlarge Still, its not all bad as found 20p behind the seats Any advice on any of the above gratefully received! Those XCL's are sweet. I used to run them all the time (although I *ahem* had a source for them)
Can't beat a basic classic looking 90/110 with 7.50s You just need an 8274 or a Husky to finish it off. |

Four days holiday and I only managed twenty minutes on it!
Still, with the aid of the angle grinder out came the battery box Bit of a clean up, then prep of the new bits and we'll be onto reassembly. Whilst waiting for more prep supplies to arrive I've started to investigate the stuck low range mechanism.
Got the top housing off, two of the bolts badly corroded, the other four nearly new looking. Not surprised to find the shaft seized in the housing. I'll drift it out, clean and lube it then replace the o-ring and refit. Then onto the diff lock which is also seized! Before putting the new battery box in I took the opportunity to flap disk the chassis back and get some CIO all over it. Mmm shiney.
Check out the amount of filth that's come off the car just from this job! Click image to enlarge Meanwhile I dry assembled the new box just to check it out. Also keyed the surfaces so the paint might last more than one drive. Click image to enlarge Then etch primed and painted it.
