That interior light bracket is ingenious! Possible not a big market but you could sell them. Peter6uk was looking for one recently on this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic25956-15.html James

Cheers fella's
Unfortunately the 3D printer isn't mine otherwise I'd get cracking and quit the day job I can enquire for others though. I'd need to check the later plastic type light is compatible, so if someone could measure the footprint of one I'll have a look. Chapter 73 of non functioning diff lock;
Having determined the central pivot was the cause of most of the slack, I ended up with a nice 8mm shoulder bolt instead of the roll pin. I think when the roll pin was hammered through the assembly unless it was perfectly aligned it sheared off the internal part of the nylon bushes. Click image to enlarge With the bushes now sitting nice and tight on the machined bearing surface of the shoulder bolt it appears to have finally resolved the issue Needs a road test to confirm, but at least the interior can go back in now. Reassembly time! I managed to acquire a full set of early 90 County Brushwood(?) cloth seats a while ago and they've been stacked in the shed waiting for me to finish fiddling with the battery box/transmission. Luckily not there long enough for the mice to find them.
Click image to enlarge Got the fronts fitted last night, a good oem upgrade over the knackered black vinyl ones. Kinda like an 80's version of fitting the premium extended leather seats! Click image to enlarge Also got a full set of mint period genuine waterproof seat covers to go on too so they will bring a bit of practicality back. One little detail I noticed that I don't think is on the newer Defender seats; a three position adjustable sprung bar which alters the height of the front of the seat base. A nice feature, probably cost saved out on the later versions. No need mudrails now Click image to enlarge Not sure when I'll fit the rear seats as I'm going to make some rubber mats for the tub first. Yeah that was never in doubt, I have fond memories of my Dad taking me and my friends out in LR's he'd borrowed from work and remember thinking the middle seat was great to get so close to the action. Hope my offspring see it that way too!
Got it out the garage for a test run now the transmission bits and interior are all back together. Good and bad news, low to high now works beautifully and being able to use low for getting back into the garage is great. Bad news is the diff lock still doesn't work properly, although at least the new switch means the dash is telling me its stuck on now! Power donuts on our gravel drive didn't help to unlock it. I'll worry about that some other time, there are other jobs I want to get on with, namely sorting out the front end. I planned to replace the cracked grille and headlight surrounds, but soon discovered another 'early 90' quirk - the headlight surrounds can be removed without taking the side & indicator lights off! Click image to enlarge So looks like I'll have to tart up the ones I've got as never seen this type for sale anywhere. I've heard boot polish is a good idea. Any tips gratefully received. New grille is easy though, anyone got one lying about!? Click image to enlarge Next steps; bumper and grille surround off, flap disk and paint all accessible chassis. I tarted up my Head Lamp surrounds, radiator grill and snorkel using Teak/furniture oil...... works well and last reasonably well.
Saw it on YouTube of course!!! Rob |

Got the grille surround and bumper off without much of a fight. Pleasantly surprised by the dumb irons as they were solid enough with only the beginnings of flakiness.
I flap-disked everything in the immediate area and got a liberal coating of buzzweld all over it. I plan to do this on every bit of chassis, so eventually it will all get a coat, bit like the Forth Bridge Click image to enlarge I procured a new grille as the old one was snapped in several places including the fixing holes. Click image to enlarge When it came to restoring the headlight surrounds I jumped in confident the boot polish idea would work. It didn't. Here is a comparison taken 5 minutes after I did the RH one and it was already fading. Looking at it 15 minutes later it looked the same as the LH one I guess the plastic absorbed all the colour!? Might try a few more coats, then try G4UJS's suggestion of Teak polish. Really don't want to buy new ones as these early ones aren't available anymore. Cheers Rob! Paint will be a last resort, was a case of trying (free) things close to hand, hence the boot polish idea first. Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! My 2015 Defender: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39625.html - SOLD! |
