Have you tried changing the oil? It could go on for years like that.
Mine used to make what can only be described as a screaming noise at certain motorway speeds. l changed the oil (the level was a bit low but not much) and it's never done it since, 30,000 miles ago |

I'll give it a try fellas, as that would be a cheap fix & see how it goes.

Sounds how mine went, it will last a few months but slowly get louder, I changed the oil as well but no difference as it is a bearing failing. A known R380 weak point.
I fitted a Ashcroft gearbox and I am happy with it, this was 18months ago. Cheers Will 2005 90 XS 1954 86'' Series 1 tilt 1968 88” 2A 200tdi 2002 110 Hardtop |

My box went from whiring to clunk. Dead.
Ashcrofts gerabox fitted. In hindsight I should have got the 5th gear cluster changed as well. I also took the chance to get various parts of the box upgraded 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Thanks for all the info lads.
Obviously it's on its last legs so time treat it to a new box by the sounds of it. New Ashcroft box & clutch it is. |

My rear support bearing collapsed at the start of this year so had a new R380 from Ashcrofts which I'm very pleased with. Took the opportunity to upgrade to the v8 5th gear ratio and HD support bearing at the same time
