So how do the thieves know when you've gone on holiday vs. gone to work?

Stick a B&B sign at the entrance to your property. Best security you can have.

Im glad it ended all good for you Ade90
They DO watch you In my old place, across the river on the other side was a small working quarry and we got on well with them as i would go over and check all was ok, one day at the weekend we had a knock on the door and it was the quarry owner, he said " just thought i would let you know that he saw someone at the top at the back of the quarry watching your yard with binoculars, by the time he had got up there the person had gone, but he had been there for a long time as all the rubbish that the person had collected was alot " So never rule it out 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. OK I couldn't wait until Friday! I have just popped (3+ hours down the road) back home to check if the house is OK and pick up the remains of the pedal lock.
Good news the house is untouched. Good news the X-eng pedal lock fought off 4 determined thieves for over an hour, before it finally succumbed to the 3ft long bolt cutters they brought with them - see picture below. Bad news is 4 blokes in balaclavas spent a hour at 3am on Tuesday morning ripping the pedal lock out my 90. They knew the CCTV was there and paraded the remains of the pedal lock in front of the CCTV before placing it on our front door mat. We live in a dorma bungalow and our daughters bedroom is right next to where the 90 is parked. My wife is beyond being pacified. Currently it look like my Land Rover ownership that started in 1992 is about to end as there is no way I can risk my families safety......Toyota here I come Click image to enlarge Fixing Land Rovers for over 25 years..........and making excuses to the wife for almost as long 1984 110 V8 - Gone, but not forgotten.... |

Scrotes,
I have fitted a "nest" cctv camera that can be set to zones and alerts me if it spots movement or people. would this and a nice bright PIR light pacify your good lady. Understand your concerns and Family first is always the way. but could you not change to a hard bodied defender? Hate when we are dictated to by the bad guys. "Of Course, Of course, I ain't asking . I'm telling!!" |

A lot of people broadcast the fact they are away on Facebook. Along with photos they have posted etc. it does not take long to work out roughly where you are, own a Defender and have just boarded a jet to somewhere sunny ! Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

True, I don't use it but I guess facebook has a lot to answer for. Same rules apply as when down the pub, don't broadcast when and where you are going away!

Hello Ade90
Sitting on a Train I have just read this thread, and wanted to wish you well as it is sad to hear that this experience has caused you to think again about owning a Defender. You should always do what feels right for you, but maybe on reflection, (and given a little time) you might conclude that... 1. You still have your Defender 2. You probably would have defeated most thieves 3. Your Tracker saved the day 4. You have the opportunity, to learn and improve your security (if your minded too, you could also liaise with X-Eng to assess / improve their product) Good Luck anyway and sorry this has happened to you... It's worth bearing in mind this site is public too, even though many of us know one another in person and it feels close knit it isn't.
Which means to say any information put on here or anywhere else's in th epublic do ani is and will be avaible to thieves. This is what annoys me so much as to when people discuss. "How can thieves break into my Defender?" Half of the details are given to them on a plate, including guides, photos for reference etc etc. Perfectly fine to talk in broad terms like what trackers are good etc, but not as to how things work. Where they are placed, how they are wired and other devices etc. I have plenty that I won't discuss with anyone or discuss anywhere. Facebook I would say is the biggest culprit, many 'groups' on there are very suspicious to me. They aren't enthusiasts, they are thieves posing. Intermingling with in groups. Careless talk, costs Land Rovers. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

If you still have CCTV from the week leading up to your Land Rover being taken, take a look as you may have recorded them looking round without their faces being covered. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

Sounds like the same crew that turned over Hatton Park not so long ago. Plus now they've been able to break open a X-eng lock, it won't take them an hour next time

Also you could check whether the pub has cctv covering the car park or internally. They probably won't let you have it but you can ask them to preserve it from being overwritten and notify the police of its existence. I would also check down my street to see whether any neighbours have cctv. The offenders or their vehicle may have been recorded by someone else. Might not be enough to convict but plenty to assist an investigation. All this checking ought to be routine stuff for the police but these days that level of service is rare. Best to look into it yourself before cctv footage is lost. I accept however that not everyone wishes to go to these lengths to catch criminals.
