Intermittent 'Clonk' pulling away/stopping
Guys,

Quick question before going ahead and replacing the A Frame ball joint. My MY13 110 with 29k on it has developed a really nasty metallic clonk. This happens when slowly coming to a stop or when pulling away. It is a horrible sound and the 'clonk' can be felt throughout the vehicle.

The strange thing is that the next day its fine, nothing. It can be fine for a few days and then suddenly its back. A horrible thud/clonk/crunch when stopping, turning slowly or pulling away from a standstill.

It happened the first time a few weeks ago. I thought it was a wheel bearing to start with. Both rear bearings are fine. The props seem fine (no play that I can see), springs and shocks 'seem' OK.

Having looked through the forum it seems that the A frame ball joint could be a likely culprit, but why the intermittent nature?

Is there anything else I should check or any other known failures?

Also, the handbrake light now comes on, again intermittently, when stoping or slowly going down a hill. I think the light has a dual purpose of 'handbrake on' and 'low brake fluid'. I've checked the fluid levels and they seem fine. I don't think the handbrake is sticking - its not hot after a long journey and I can coast without any resistance.

Any ideas?

Does a whistle mean 'expensive' whilst the smiley means 'no problem' or 'DIY'.

What would this one mean Evil or Very Mad Censored Thud

They mean that jim_bean's truck is outside the office window, next to mine and we went out have a look!! Laughing

I'd already suggested the bushes = Whistle

and after rocking the motor back and forth by the wheel, the handbrake drum clunks = Very Happy

So it'll get stripped on Wednesday...though we can't re-produce the clunking noise when driven...typically.

Yep - handbrake is the most likely contender at the moment.

Still odd that it only happens every few days. Also only seems to happen when its raining! Although could be a total coincidence.

I had this with the hand brake drum and it would only show after about 20 miles or so.
had it replaced under the used car warranty scheme.

Did you get the brake light illuminating as well as the clonk?

I didn't get the brake light and it was on my 2.4 truck cab

It only happened when slowing down at low speeds once driven for a while.

On a short run it never happened.

when it did happen you could feel it through the floor

It does sound similar. Hopefully the problem will be easy to spot once I have the prop and handbrake drum off!

The most likely reason for this is that although the fluid level is up to the MAX mark, it still isn't high enough to stop the light coming on when the fluid surges to the front of the reservoir whilst the brakes are applied. On my Defender, I have to have the fluid level right up to the bottom of the reservoir filler neck in order to avoid exactly the behaviour you describe.

Mine was OK normally, but if you braked hard, or if you braked going downhill, the combined surge was enough to illuminate the warning light. I topped the level up and it hasn't happened for 150k miles since.

Thanks Blackwolf. I'll top it up to get rid off the light warning coming on under braking.

I'll check the handbrake assembly though to see if can locate the cause of the 'clonk'.
