Experimenting with a heater air scoop - numpty question
Folks,

The heater in my '05 Td5 is pretty good.... Nothing fantastic but capable.

I've read so many threads on various forums on the pros/cons of a heater air scoop that I decided to get one and just see if there was any noticeable difference.

It's a dead easy fix and no problems there but I have a rather silly question.........

Should you replace the existing plastic wing top grille, or should you simply stick the scoop over the top of the existing? Embarassed

My logic was to stick over existing given that ...
1) The scoop fits snugly over the existing grill, like it's meant to be so.
2) The scoop does have a grille but I thought it perhaps better to have both scoop grille and old grille in place to minimise the amount of crap that could be collected going into the heater
3) The existing grille has what I can only describe as some 'baffles' built into it, which I guess help with directing/regulating air flow.

All that said though, please correct me if that is not the right way to do it......

Cheers Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

I would say its designed to replace the original one but if it fits nicely over the original one and looks good then just fit it over the top, it will stop leafs being sucked up and getting stuck in your heater matrix.

Another reason why to leave the origional in........ You won't loose it!! Don't you hate it when you try to put something back to origional and you can't remember where you put the part Rolling Eyes

I had the same dilemma when fitting the KBX Scoops! As one who suffers from a slight case of OCD I would propose two to maintain the balance and asymmetry! By removing the blanking plate and fitting the second it would also give more cooling airflow to your engine compartment! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

I left the 2nd off as it also allows more cooling air to the enigne, water into the engine and other debris. Mike

Haven't tried it yet. Will report back tomorrow after work journeys.

And I'm being swayed to just leaving it at one.

Thanks all for input Thumbs Up Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Would be interesting to see a Defender in a windtunnel to see how the air flows over the wings.

Pleased to report that there was an improvement in the flow of air into the cab. It's not a massive improvement but certainly one that warrants keeping the scoop. What's most pleasing is that the improvement was felt from 30mph upwards, so you don't have to drive like a loon to get the benefit. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Hi Laurie - have you or anyone else seen the effect of a brick in a wind tunnel? Rolling with laughter

On a dry day, sellotape loads of 2" bits of wool all around the area you want to test, then drive along with someone else videoing the results - real basic DIY wind tunnelling used in the 60s/70s for tuning cars.....

Lets us know how (if) you get on with it!

Good point, when you drive off with standing water on the vehicle, it doesn't so much blow back toward the screen as straight up onto the top of the screen toward the roof. I suspect the nose creates such a level of turbulence that air just lifts directly at the top of the cab missing out the wingtops all together!
