It's not that side facing seats are illegal per se. But children under a certain age/weight must use an appropriate child seat and none of those are approved for use in side facing seats, which in practice makes it illegal for small children to use them.
To be honest, this is with good reason - the dangers to small children in side facing seats is well documented. It's only in the last year or so that I've allowed my kids to use these seats in my 90 as they're both now taller than their mother Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? It might be one of those new laws that doesn't apply retrospectively, so older vehicles are exempt? I don't know, but a lot of laws have come in and classic cars don't have to abide by them. Instagram: l90andy

In this case, the law is about child seats rather than the vehicles themselves and applies to everything.
(There are some specific exceptions around minibuses and vehicles without seatbelts but they don't apply here.) Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

One of the reasons I sold my TD5 90 and bought a Puma Station Wagon was due to the fact that I occasionally carry my Grandchildren in the back and wanted a better seat for them than the sideways versions in the event of an accident.

Ah well, a Defender will never be a safe vehicle. Might as well trade it in for an Audi station wagon? ðŸ¤ðŸ˜‰
