They're not that soft. These two Welsh collies are proper tough, it's minus whatever outside and they are in the river having a swim Crazy fool dogs.
But Pi is heading 9 and spends a good amount of time travelling in the crate so he deserves a bit of comfort in his retirement years I just hope someone does me the same courtesy when I get there |

Took a little drive out with the dogs this afternoon before dark. I can tell you it was exceptionally cold up on the hills and I forgot my gloves

Great pics I’m very jealous of the scenery. Just had my first outing on some seriously muddy slushy roads I expected more grip than I had but I suspect no vehicle would’ve been great on it

Yeah it was pretty special up there, some of the ice was heading 3-4" thick in places. No snow or slush, just frozen.
The traction was excellent off the ice so nothing to worry about there, but when you get into deepish slush on ice it can be "interesting"... What tyres have you got fitted? the three peaks mountain rating or snowflake rating is worth every penny of the premium price it allows. |

I’ve got bf Goodrich all terrains, they have loads of tread, but sadly they sat for 8 years and are a little perished 🫣

Yup hard perished rubber is no good at all. This is why you have to be super careful buying second hand tyres and why there should really be caravan and trailer MOTs...

That looks lovely, and temperature aside, it makes me want to get out and about this weekend. That thread about the Abergwesyn Pass has got me looking forward to getting into mid-Wales early next year - notwithstanding the beautiful landscape and lovely lanes on your doorstep Geobloke 👍 The reality is I’ll be over in your neck of the woods sooner and more frequently and I’m looking forward to it 🤞 |

It is a stunning place to live and work that is for certain. I am fortunate. I am planning on an early start tomorrow, see if I can photograph the sunrise. Should be pretty special. Well as long as the clouds keep away that is... What I am hoping for is a beautiful bit of valley mist with the sun rising over the top. Might get lucky...
Whatever your reality is Screbble. You know where I am if you get stuck in a mud hole |

Well those photos didn't happen, woke up at 0545 to thick grey cloud. Sometimes you are just meant to have a lie in...
But, I have managed to get through most of the winter prep which will hopefully allow me to gain access to Miffy Unlike yesterday when the doors were frozen shut. In particular the front mud flaps are back on so that will keep the majority of the crud off the sides of Miffy. I think I might have even managed to put the Gwyn Lewis kit on correctly this time Then all the door seals have been cleaned and smeared with a little silicone grease, so fingers crossed the seals won't freeze as badly to the doors this week. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge On to the Exmoor Trim premium radiator muff which I have had for a long long time and have been waiting to fit. Looks good, fits very snuggly too. Only downside is that the LED light bar doesn't allow for the muff to be rolled up completely or neatly. I will have to have a think about what to do about that. I can get it 2/3rds open and I suspect for the majority of what I do that will be enough over the next few months or so. Because of this I have not refitted the bonnet seal and will see how things progress over the next few weeks. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Finally, I have been having some weird LED headlight flickering issues since removing the faulty stand-alone headlight loom. Completely random, dipped and high beam, one then the other. Weird. But, what is obvious is that it must be down to the voltage the LEDs are receiving. One of two downsides to LEDs over halogen bulbs for sure. The other is ice buildup in the lenses. So currently the power is going through the light switch and there is a whopping 3.4v drop from the 14.16 volts being supplied by the alternator. There, is the reason for the flicker. At one point the drivers-side light was only getting 10.9v Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Backtracked up the looms and not so far away there was a good 12.5v so the obvious culprit is the H4 bulb connectors and sure enough it was 12.5v on one side of the connector and 11v on the other side. Dirt, grime, corrosion, bad connection and 20 something years old. A quick clean and adjustment of the blade contact and voila a healthy 12.5-9v at each light and no more flickering. Success hopefully. What was interesting though was that the front side light was getting 13.2v but the headlight was getting 12.5v... Must be some weirdness going on through the light switch. But it does make me think that re-installing the stand-alone headlight loom with its dedicated power supply might be a good plan after all. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

It’s a shame the photo never happened - there’s always next time 👍
Electrical weirdness eh? It’s hardly surprising given the age and the elements. When I was an apprentice, we used to have diamond tip contact cleaners for all the open ‘finger’ relays and connections used in industrial control panels. They used to work brilliantly on auto electrics - spade terminals etc. We also used ‘switch cleaner.’ I have the latter but not the former. I wonder if you can still get them… Thankfully you don’t need one now - good job well done 👍 |

Well I am a big fan of electrical contact cleaner and I used the last of it on these H4 plugs. I have it primarily for cleaning the MAP and MAF sensors at service time. Great stuff to have in your service kit.
So, first drive out with the rad muff. Excellent. it is hovering around -1-2 degC this morning and even with the crazy bonnet to wing gap the coolant warmed up 3 miles quicker than it normally does, that includes a mile of 20mph village and importantly the temp was quick to rise and slow to fall. All this equals warm inside. It is a bit retro as mods go, but I am a fan. I am also a fan of the mesh when the muff flap is up as it will make an excellent wading debris filter. I was a little concerned about the lack of cold air through the intercooler, but it didn't seem to have that much of an effect on this short journey (which is what the muff is for) and perhaps the ambient temperature is low enough that the intake temps are post turbo are ok. Perhaps. Either way the EGTs were well within normal operating parameters so for now let's see what happens. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Also, heated windscreens and mirrors are awesome... Although it looks like the mirror elements have peeled back from the glass over the summer. But... What is the best tape to use to re-stick it to the mirror back??? Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Utter madness...
.... Possibly.... So Miffy originally came out with Techno cloth seats (pre-Puma) and I loved them to bits. But... I decided to upgrade to Puma seats for the XS look. Would I be crazy to go back to the TD5 techno seats? |

Not really madness - or at least I don’t think so.
I remember looking longingly at the LR sales brochures, and admiring the ‘new’ Techno trim. I’ve seen some originals in excellent condition, and some that have been re-trimmed, and they look great. Although I suspect that even if the former covers are in good condition, then they may still require the foam/cushions ‘revitalising,’ so a complete re-trim might be the best bet. We are probably in the minority Geobloke - and that’s not something I’d lose sleep over. After all, I’m in the LR Boosts camp also… |
