Yes, but JLR must have realised those stick on incontinence pads would just fall off after a mile or so!

Is it leaking from the seal or wicking down the splines?

What state is the drive flange seal land in because you don't say that you've replaced the drive flange and if previous seals have worn grooves on the sealing land then any replacement won't last long.

Mine was leaking when I bought it. It was a handy way of knocking the price down! It happens on the TDci because when they put that particular engine in, it ended up that the gearbox sits on the slant with the back end down.
The oil eventually runs down the splines because of the angle. I can't remember exactly what it is you use but it's some kind of locking compound between the splines on the shaft and flange. Some googling should find out what it is you need. Did mine a couple of years ago and hasn't leaked since |

I did fit a new drive flange one time but it still leaked!
I will seal the splines next time. I get that constant slight smell of hot gear oil as it must flick the odd drop onto the exhaust. |

My transfer box gave up so a recon was put in and after 2 weeks the same happened to mine what has happened to yours, so i replaced the seal and the handbrake shoes and then after another 2 weeks the same happened again so went in again and changed the seal and the handbrake shoes and after another 2 weeks, guess what, yes it was doing the same thing, so by chance i was working close to my mechanic's place and popped in, the day was a very hot day and the oil was very warm, so we put her up on the ramp and we found the problem.... the oil was leaking between the seal and the transfer box casing, so they did a creative fix which stopped the oil coming out until another TB was at the workshop to change it over and once that was done, i have not had a leak again The firm that the TB came from where good as gold, did not argue or complain, they sent another TB with in a few days

I know you should replace your handbrake shoes when they had contact with oil, but I clean them with degreaser a few times and then rub them with sandpaper and I put them back. Till now they never failed the MOT on working only once on adjustment. 2 minute fix and it was OK. Roel

Are you replacing the white felt washer that sits under the washer that holds the flange on? FRC2464 is the part number. 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

My TC used to leak, no matter what, genuine parts, non gen parts sealant, no sealant still leaking.
Changed the TC (drastic) But after swapping out for a Disco one, I could inspect better and found some scratches on the inside were the seal sat. Now with the Disco one, all is well. (apart from towing, and long hills) 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

New shoes, seal and felt washer fitted.
Seal fitted with flange sealant and loctite on the splines, all aligned with the proper alignment tool. Fingers crossed |
