But according to the video, they started with a completely blank sheet of paper. So it must just be an enormous coincidence that it looks just like every other model on that page |

Could be true.
After all, if you give a 5-year-old ten completely blank sheets of paper and ask them to draw ten cars, chances are they will all look the same. |

After watching the Velar launch video & the whole corporate feel I now feel now more than ever that my Defender will be the last ever LR I will purchase; I also have this sneaky suspicion that the new Defender will never see the light of day...where will it actually fit into the rather faceless LR homogenous world?
If that was Jeep err Fiat launching a new Cherokee without doubt the stage would have been shared with a Wrangler...read what you will into that but I cannot see how a new and proper fit for purpose Defender will be welcomed into the slick corporate world LR now seems to have fallen in love with...sad really. And I took this picture today in the Western Cape...which one will stay in your memory for longer than it takes to watch a YouTube vehicle launch video...the white one or the updated Austin Allegro parked behind it? Click image to enlarge Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains |

Not just LR making some odd decisions. The sale of Opel/Vauxhall for just £2 billion has amazed me. When the Bolt EV is ready, they will have to sell it through their Chevrolet subsidiary, even though Opel and Vauxhall has a far bigger impact with the buying public. GM had already stated that it wouldn't let Vauxhall sell the Bolt, but it was a given that Opel would, named the Ampera E. I guess that is off the table now. £2 billion sounds far too cheap. I still wouldn't say that the buying French/Chinese group had a bargain, but more the fact that GM has lost two brands that are/were hugely exploitable. You don't let a brand name go for a song when you've supported it for decades. I'm stunned. If Opel and Vauxhall can go for £2 billion, it makes you wonder at the low value of JLR.

^^ All very good points.
That particular deal to me leads me to think that there may be bigger problems on the horizon which GM wanted to kick away before it bit them. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

So by pursuing the buisiness model they are, what are the chances of Land Rover be on the market in a few years?

My two pence.
I think LR know what their brand is based upon. I think that JLR are bigger than one designer. How much does the designer actually get involved in the engineering? does he actually understand utility... probably not, but could he wrap it up in a nice package with a comfortable layout? probably. JLR know that the defender is a huge project... they know they need to get it right.... my prediction is that we will see it in 2018, having been launched at one of the major European car shows. I also think that LR will do some big PR stunt with it... maybe some sort of expedition... I don't think they will launch it in a conference room and BS us that it can do incredible things..,. I think they will show us. I do think it will be great off road... look at what Bowler are doing these days... its dressed as a defender but is nothing of the sort underneath. Either way... I can't wait to find out what they have got under their hats! |
