Ashcroft higher 5th gear option on R380
Hi
I am planning on installing a replacement R380 gearbox to my 1997 Defender 90 300 tdi.
Should I go for the higher 5th gear option?
I was planning on running the car with 235/85 R16 tyres as it feels to low geared on the standard tyre sizes.
The only engine upgrade I have is a double core intercooler.
Any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I have the taller 5th on my Td5, with the disco/puma transfer box it makes high speed cruising effortless. I believe that the taller 5th is 5% taller than standard so with a defender transfer box it would make a 150rpm difference at 3000 rpm.

Yes. Depending on how much power you bav available you may have to shift down on motorway hills. Otherwise excellent.

Hi
I would have no hesitation if I had a TD5 as it has more power and torque.

I would have thought a standard Tdi could cope with a 5% top gear increase. After all the Tdi is fitted to the disco which is much heavier and has 18% or so taller gearing Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Are the tyres smaller than 235/85 R16?

I almost did go for the taller fifth gear option, however was advised not to by Ashcrofts as I already had a disco transfer box. Even with a remapped ECU.

I did however opt for the updated bearings though Thumbs Up

I've recently fitted an Ashcroft box with a v8 5th gear ratio and am very pleased with the difference. In conjunction with 285/75 tyres it makes motorway speeds significantly quieter although that is in a TD5.

If you have an uprated I/C already then why not turn the boost and fuelling up a touch? That would help pull the gearing increase on motorway hills.

I was hoping that somebody with a 300tdi with the higher 5th gear option would have responded.
Maybe nobody has opted for it?

I have a TD5 with the higher 5th and very happy with it.

A friend has a 300tdi with a 1.2 Tbox and is very happy with it, thought it is slower off the line.

Based on that, I'd say you'd have no issues with the v8 5th in a 300tdi!

I have a 300Tdi with R380 box with 5th gear, Td5 transfer box. Great on motorways but need to be over 35-40 before changing up otherwise it labours. A Slickshift makes gear changing much easier. Jeff

When you say you have a td5 transfer box are they not the same as a 300tdi? Or do you mean you have a 1.2 ratio transfer box like a disco combined with the higher 5th gear option from ashcroft?
