OK to reuse engine oil?
Hi all,

The wife drives a Range-rover Evoque which suffers from oil dilution.

Subsequently, between very regular oil changes & services I siphon off excess engine oil.

I was wondering whether I could add a few liters to the defenders fuel, so that it doesn't go to waste.

The car in question is a 2009 2.4 TDCi 110 with 60k miles on it. It's also my daily driver, so I don't want to do anything detrimental to the engine!

Just no... modern common rail diesels do not like anything other than diesel. Even some other less refined diesels in foreign regions can play havoc with injectors and the injector pump. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

I used to do this on my old Disco. After changing oil on Disco, Volvo, Motorbike, Lawn Mowers, I had a LOT spare/used oil every spring. Bought a filter off ebay, and used it in the Discovery (about 1 litre to every full tank). NEVER had a problem, and I bought the vehicle new, and owned it for 187,000 miles. Mechanically it was still A1 when I sold it.

Not sure I would do it in a later vehicle with CAT, DPF etc...

Now I take the old oil to the council tip for re-cycling. In fact I have at least 20 litres now (just changed the oil on the GF's Astra... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Some folk slap it onto their chassis for protection, but if you can’t put it onto your fence like Blackwolf suggests perhaps
that is illegal too.......maybe someone can advise?

Well it is carcinogenic and environmentally damaging so it isn’t surprising. It then also has the capabilities of contaminating land, and watercourses. Then to the water table and ultimately drinking water and habitat for wildlife. Anti freeze isn’t too dissimilar either and rightly should be disposed of correctly. However, local authorities deliberately make things as difficult and as expensive as they can!
I expect garages would take it too for an environmental fee. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

If you put it into a clear container you may find that the fuel and oil separate. then you can siphon off what you want.
I know petrol and diesel mix separates, so maybe the diesel/oil mix will also. I got hold of 50l from a miss fuelled car many years ago, after leaving it in a clear container for a few days I could suck out and use the petrol. 1953 80"

I have just caught up on this thread & it caused me to remember something from my time in Africa. In the early ‘eighties I worked in Angola. It was on some mines there & the company involved extensively used Series L/R’s, Fuscas, (Brasileiro VW Beetles) & CAT earthmoving equipment as well as lots of other machines & vehicles.
Conditions were challenging. Parts were reused on a very regular basis to the extent that the scrap yards were well visited. My anecdote is that the mechanics said they did sometimes reuse engine oil when doing a first service. I think they thought it was of a better quality with it originating from UK when compared to the locally sourced engine oil. The locally sourced engine oil was readily available in the workshops so presumably it was a question of preference. I can only remember the mechanics doing it at a first service.
I am not suggesting that anyone does the same today.
