That's exactly what the research linked to above says. It's nothing to do with lubrication or lack of it, but the zinc that's contained in the 2SO being deposited on the injectors. Darren

Reading further and doing some googling it seems that it could be harmful to common rail engines running high pressure pumps and tight injector tolerances.
I think for the Td5 which is basically the same a VAG pd diesel engines relatively low pressure with individual injector pumps it shouldn't cause any issues.
I have run 2 stroke oil in mine for about 80,000 miles so far without any fuel system failures - I'm not saying that makes me right but it certainly hasn't had and detrimental effect to my vehicle which still goes just as well as ever and is noticeably smoother and quieter when run with 2 stoke oil.
When I changed the injector seals about 12 months ago the injectors had zero carbon buildup.

Surely if two stroke oil at 1% or whatever, made diesel better, and improved the running of the vehicle (many claim better mpg) the fuel companies would put it into the fuel.

As they spend fortunes developing these fuels to be better. Or does it mess up emissions?

One of the reasons given for the recent fuel price increase is that because vehicles these days are so frugal there not selling as much !

One thing is for sure, the oil companies and government want to sell as much fuel as possible!
Making it better so you use less is definitely not in their interest! That's why shell vpower and bp ultimate have a premium on them. They cost more to produce and there is a smaller market for it so they add 5p per litre to make up for the comparatively low sales volume.

There are various stories of "revolutionary" engines being invented, and then the design is bought by some fuel company and mothballed.
Some years ago there was an engine which was supposed to pretty much run on water, the patent was bought (supposedly) by Ford and put away, as it would have rendered their new small engine design obsolete immediately.

Usually get around 300 until I fill it up.

Calculated on tank size and MPG, it should do 360miles until it's totally dry. Chris

Ok resurrecting an oldish thread but I have to show this because I think it is an awesome testiment to the Land Rover Defender and the TD5 engine.

After more than 171k miles it is still managing to get to (almost) 400 miles from a tank of fuel Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

And better than that it still has a few miles in the tank too Thumbs Up

This is on a 2003 110 CSW with full roll cage, winch out front, two adults, a weekends worth of dog training paraphernalia and many "comfort breaks". Super impressed.

Best I have done so far is 320. I do find, though that the needle appears to drop quicker from half to a quarter, that 3/4 to half. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yeah, this falls in to the "they all do that sir" category. You'd think that LR would manage to design a gauge and sender system that works in a linear fashion or at least was calibrated...
