United Kingdom 2002 Defender 90 Td5 HT Caledonian Blue
I have run out of fuel but that was my own fault. I left the house to get fuel as the light had been on for a while, got to the fuel station and had left my wallet at home Embarassed so drove home got my wallet and as I went to start it again to go to the fuel station again it wouldn't start so had to get a jerry can and put a gallon in to get there Laughing

I'm not worried about sludge in the tank because:
1) my defender never sits around.
2) I regularly run it low.
3) I change the filter way more than I need to.
4) where would sludge come from?
5) sludge would settle at the bottom of the tank, where the pump pickup is, anyway regardless of fuel level.
6) plastic fuel tank so a rusty tank can't contribute to any detritus that is in there.

Don't want to sound patronising or anything the above list is just what I think. I'm probably wrong (usually am!) But running low hasnt caused me any problems so far! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I get 280 miles from my 200 tdi with a TD5 90 tank on a long run.
I feel so inadequate but at least the EMP won't get me 😉

Covering an average of 61k a year.

Never let a puma run out of diesel or you will need a manual lift pump to get it started again. Big Cry Monty-2015 2.2 110 XS Puma Station Wagon

Sixty one thousand miles per year in a Defender?

I love my Defender and cover about 12,000 miles per year. But sixty thousand? That's some going.
l think that must be some kind of record. Anybody do more than that per year?

The trouble is I love it, mostly work cover from Brighton, Birmingham down to Bristol. Some round trips of 420 miles, take her down to Southern Spain 3-4 times a year at 3500 miles a go. It's easy done. The only thing which I myself find it hard to believe. I find it comfortable. Very Happy Monty-2015 2.2 110 XS Puma Station Wagon

You didn't sound patronising Grafty 😊

I know the tank is 60 litres - but can it pick that much up? Or is there always a bit left? I'm thinking how low I can run it, and I'm guessing it's however much you got in it after it ran out?...

I can't remember how much I put in it when it ran out which is annoying. Last time I ran it really low I got 57L in it I think. The tank holds 60 but I reckon that by the time you burp the air out and brim it all the way to the neck it's a bit more than 60L. Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Just has a look and my last really low fill up was 59.78L so either it will drain the tank dry or it holds more than 60L Whistle

Thank you 😊

I just did some numbers and if I'd kept going on my most economic run to date (just under 32mpg) - I'd have got 420 miles from the tank !

Once I have achieved the same mpg across 3 tanks I'm going for 420 which incidentally is what I'd worked out I could do by running it to the extreme. Going to take a 5L can or diesel with me just in case lol 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
