Well our little pal, is in the vets at the moment, he took bad late on Thursday night, with some kind of infection, so his right eye was swollen up. He is in a lot of pain sadly, So he is 40 mins away from home Big Cry Also the cost of sorting him out is 2k plus, so a fine bloody year this is Evil or Very Mad Big Cry Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Thanks lads, Handle bar head is back home now, with a lamp shade on. He has got pockets of infections on the side of his head. He is like when we 1st got him, he is that unsettled at the moment. Poor little pal. Sad 2k the bill has come to, People really need to stop giving bad advice. My mum took some bad advice on not to get him insured and look whats happend. I don't think it's necessarily bad advice / good advice, it depends a lot on the dog. I did my research and the conclusion and best bit of advice was, probably, not to pay out for insurance but put that money you would be paying aside. If the dog needed a big vets bill then it was there, if the dog lived it's life without issue then you still had the money. Looking into most insurances at the time (6 years ago now) then very little was covered.

Mind you this was with our line of Labs which we know the history of, if it was a rescue we might be in a slightly different situation. Touch wood my eldest apart from the usual wormer and a couple of scans when she was pregnant has had nothing in the way of vets bills. The younger one has managed to rack up £1.1k due to slicing her foot just above the wrist on something unknown in a pond in Wimbledon (2" long and down to the bone, incredibly luckily missing all the tendons). Ironically this was probably the one situation where the insurance might have paid out.

Still doesn't help the situation though, vets bills are normally a bit of a kick in the teeth. Mind you most things to do with a vet are, the worst is the stuff I use for tick prevention when I go to Scotland - I've never had a tick on any of them whilst using that but it was ~£70 / dog for 3 months. The pills themselves are about £20 but then it's a prescription that usually the girls on reception fill out not the vet Evil or Very Mad . Ed

Glad you have your Pal home Procta.

Never insured a dog up until we got Meg, our latest Labrador.

We have, touch wood, never had to claim. My last black Lab ended up with a similar Vets bill to yours. It really is a game of chance. Some of the Pet insurances aren’t worth the paper they are written on Sad

Best wishes for a good recovery

Even if you'd have pet insurance, your excess would probably have been about £400. Add that to the £200 or so of premiums every year and all of a sudden the numbers don't look so bad. Plus your premium would have shot up after the claim.

Personally, I'd like really cheap pet insurance with an excess of at least £1000. I can afford the day to day stuff, but would like to be covered for any really big claims.

He is back up to his old self again, but the cost Shocked I think really has put a damper on xmas this year, My dad doesn't know the full price. Which is about 2k now, he thinks its only 1200. So my mum kept it quiet, other wise he would have blown his lid. AS you say about pet insurance, I have told my mum to put money to one side now, for him. As you say pet insurances are not really worth it, due to what's covered. Also you cannot make the same claim again either.

Also handle bar head is one year old today Very Happy flanboyant thing he is i have to say Rolling Eyes Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
