Sulisuli, I have learned, to my expense, never to view a car in the rain and to always walk around it three times (not some kind of witchcraft ritual but because you'll always miss issues on the first one, or two, passes).
It is a nice truck and getting the roof done is a minor inconvenience if you're happy with the rest of it. I'm sure you looked at a few before buying yours and there are plenty of dogs out there. Neglected Defenders don't age well and if the only issue you have is a small roof repair, I'd suggest it is a small price to pay to find a good one. Is it ideal, nope! but speaking as someone who bought a performance car with a broken engine, it can always be worse Get it sorted and move onto enjoying that great looking 90. |

Have a look on their website and see if they are a member of the VBRA, if they are, suggest you might report them to the VBRA for shoddy work if they aren't more helpful Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

The garage who "arranged" the paint job wont tell me who the spray shop are, all they have said is they often spray high end super cars!! 2015 HT XS 90

Black Defender with a black roof is too much "black", imho.
I suggest you paint the roof silver, for a bit of contrast. Pickles. |

Here is an extract from an email from the garage who arranged/carried out the work, quote
There could be a number of reasons why this issue has happened from lack of prep, paint/materials could be faulty, tree sap or similar has reacted with the roof or chemicals from a car wash or cleaning product could also cause lifting on a freshly painted roof. Could anyone enlighten me if tree sap or similiar, or cleaning products could cause lifting on paint to the degree it has on my roof please? I feel its more likely to be the former "lack of prep, paint/materials" but maybe Im biased? 2015 HT XS 90 2008 SVX 90 2000 XS TD5 90 |

Tree Sap - only if you parked the Defender near Chernobyl or Fukushima
I've seen chemicals ruin paint - the best example being a local 'hand wash' spraying a friends bike with alloy wheel cleaner to get off a stubborn mark on the paint, only for the paint to dissolve from his Hayabusa However, it is unlikely that anyone has taken it upon themselves to climb onto your roof and spray corrosive chemicals onto it. Poor prep sounds the most likely - hence their fault. As an aside, have you considered speaking with trading standards? It might be worth asking what the law says regarding distance and warranty work. I would imagine it is your responsibility to get the vehicle to them; however, you may be pleasantly surprised and find that they have to make some accommodation if the repair is due to poor workmanship. I can't see how any of those 'reason' aren't the garages responsibility? Tree sap or cleaning products wouldn't have been an issue if it had been properly prep'ed? James

Once again AM94 excellent words of advice and information. I have today asked the garage in question if they would consider making a financial offer of recompense or assistance to close this matter out and I will take it to an independent paint shop in Cornwall to have the work done.
I did ask them this a week ago but they didnt reply to that part of my email only to offer the respray if I took it back to them so I felt I would offer them one more opportunity to assist me in rectifing this by making a payment toward me having it done locally to me. I would accept £300.00 which is half the cost of the respray. I am hopeful they will they will consider this reasonable and make the contribution. If they dont then I will explain that whilst I dont wish to "name and shame" in a public forum I will do because other people considering having work done on their Landrovers need to be made aware of the calibre of work the garage carried out with regard to "this paintwork" and whilst I acknowledge anyone can make a mistake when doing work having made a mistake try and recitify the situation so your reputation is upheld as a company. I just wonder how much monetary value they put on their reputation obviously less than £300.00. 2015 HT XS 90 2008 SVX 90 2000 XS TD5 90 |

I am not a professional car painter! However I would have thought determining if the painted area had been correctly prepared for painting would be possible.
From the photos, it seems the underlying 'higher' paint colour is still very 'glossy'. I had my roof resprayed black on my 110 a few years ago... it was metallic Indus Silver. The paint shop thoroughly rubbed down (sanded) the silver (and the layer of clear lacquer as well) almost to a matt appearance to give the new black paint a good 'key' for the new paint to adhere to. Perhaps a visit to your local RAC depot for a 'pre-purchase' paint inspection would offer some expert advice on this? Good luck! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |
