Wipac Crystal Halogen headlamps and better bulbs - worth it?
Hello

Before the winter sets in... I thought maybe I should fit some higher power bulbs I've had for almost a year !

When doing this as I cannot decide on LED front headlights is it worth changing to Wipac Crystal?

Here are my bulbs...

This is the current front 'look'

and a close up....

I'm also tempted to put different side lights and indicators on but again cannot decide what...

The name I've seen on the current headlamps is wipac quadoptic?

Is it worth doing? if you have can you post a picture please.

Many thanks

Many many posts on this subject...

My solution was Crystal lights with uprated bulbs and LED side, brake and indicators all round - i chose Wipac LEDs

Many options out there and most are much better than standard.

If you're not sure on LED headlights, why not have best of both worlds?

Cystal headlights but with LED replacement bulbs ... bought from here ... http://fourby.co.uk/epages/950004277.sf/en...ucts/LEDH4

I, like many others have bought these, the results are FANTASTIC! .... OK, there are not a match for Speakers or Noldens, but as good/bright as the Trucklite Headlights tried before, and the various cheaper chinese headlamps ..... Hell of a price saving too Cool

They give a proper beam pattern, are E marked and pass an MOT without issue .... did I mention they are bright ? Thumbs Up Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Same as BM52 above here only with RDX LED lights.
Crystals are combined with updated bulbs are about the best upgrade you'll get with a Halogen light on the Def.

I've stayed with the set up for a long time and will continue to do so.
It's a good time to fit stainless light bezels too whilst at it.
If you want in future you could upgrade to LED headlights instead.
I've considered it and may go to LED headlights at some point but cost is prohibitive at the moment.

Dave-H - Not seen those before. I assume they are H4 fitment?
How does the Lumen rating compare to others?

Would be interested to know what the Philips H4 lumen output is, but non LED it's not listed unless I missed something.
I have been happy with them all the same.

Right now I've got to get my aligned and adjusted again properly with lighting alignment thingy as I but the out changing my springs earlier this year.
They are far to low at the moment.

Yes, H4 [they do H7 too].

Review page here ... http://fourby.co.uk/epages/950004277.sf/en...ductRating not a bad word said.
They are rated at 4200 raw lumens, as good if not better than many LED headlamps. Speakers and Noldens will both be better, most other makes aren't ... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Thanks !!

Custom90 I like your set up, what bulbs did you use. Is it an easy swap?

I also like the LED bulb idea with the wipac crystals but they are out of stock what do I search for?

I guess if I change the side lights and indicators to LED I need a new relay also? Are the bulbs with these (the wipac indicators and side lights)

I've looked at the Chinese LED offerings....just not sure if they would work any length of time / be safe / legal.

mmmmmm more choices Smile

I guess the crystals with my H4 upgraded bulbs I already have would be a good start?

What sort of Current do the uprated Halogens pull? I would guess that the LEDs are a lower draw meaning that there is less need to upgrade the loom. Keith

The Wipac indicators came with a new relay with an adjuster to regulate the flash rate. When 1st fitted mine illuminatd the tow warning light. A slight turn of the adjuster and all was good.

I had RDX on my previous Defender, both are good products IMHO

I have to admit I'm no expert and just looking to find way through the various options like you.

I've read that using full beam the current flows through the switch on the steering column so putting larger bulbs in can result in damage to the switch (premature failure). Also current flow/volt drop can be limited by the switch and cabling meaning you do not get the full benefit of the brighter bulbs as the volt drop becomes an issue. Hence 3rd party looms being available.

My thoughts were that with the lower Wattage and current draw of LED bulbs I may not have to think about premature switch failure or replacement loom.

As I said I'm no expert just looking at the same questions at the same time and wondering if there is a better way than £400 on LED units Keith

Keith - A pair of H4 halogens @ 55w approx each 110w total draw almost 10A draw the pair @ 12.2v ignition voltage.
Around 7.5A draw @ approx 14.2v engine running with alternator charging current. (Normal operating use.)

LED headlights are around 1.8A draw at a guess I'd say. (Don't quote me on that.)

Stacey007 - Sidelights and brake lights are a straight swap.
Indicators do require a relay, two options either RDX or Wipac.

I have the following.
RDX sidelights.
RDX brake lights. (Standard colours)
RDX indicators rear (standard colours) front (clear XS style)
RDX adjustable relay. (A must to adjust flash rate and inc trailer light functions.) (You can tow now problem too.)
Nakatanega / 4x4 Overlander LED side repeaters. (Clear XS style)
Stainless headlight bezels.
Wipac Crystal headlights.
Philips Extreme H4 +90% headlight bulbs.
Finally Wipac SMD LED number plate light.

Only things that aren't LES on mine are headlights and dash bulbs.

I've got LED interior lights. (Custom colours) and footwell and bulkhead SMD LED strips paired with the in vehicle lighting system.
So it all works in sync as standard lighting.

I've also got some Electroluminescent (EL) wire around my sub and amp on asound activated or permanent on driver.

^ sounds good

What do the "Stainless headlight bezels" do?

I 'think' I may go down this sort of route.

Have you a pic of the rear lights please.

Looking closer at the picture in the mentioned link, the LED Driver for those CREE Leds states 40 W, so 80 w is approx. 5.6 A @ 14.4 V... Still approx 30 savings. May be just enough to safely omit the Boomslang or Landreiziger headlight loom. If using original headlight bulbs I think it is just a matter of time when (not if) the headlight switch will burn out. Cheers, Vincent
