Hello
Does this help keep going down until you see the bracket that holds the mirror http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43275-135.html Given yours was a van maybe you have not got this behind the headlining as you would have never had a mirror? |

lots of help. I have that exact fitting but have no idea that I would need riv nuts as there were none fitted. The mirror just has a spring loaded clip on it.
Were the tools an ebay purchase? I need a rivi nut tool for some other tasks |

There is a plate that gets screwed onto the bracket you have when the rivnuts are fitted then the mirror fits to the plate. Ray

It's a defender, anything over 40mph and the side and rearview mirrors just vibrate like a rampant rabbit...so you wont be able to see anything anyway...

My rear view mirror does that, but my wing mirrors are fine at full speed ahead? and I've got the large Mud ones? |

Removed my rear view mirror today, what a difference being able to see through the entire windscreen not have a lump of plastic half way down it.
Will look for a stick on one tomorrow to place at the top of the screen. |

I got rid of mine long ago.
Was right in my line of sight and had to keep ducking underneath it to see across junctions. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Bear in mind that the interior mirror is a legal requirement on vehicles manufactured from 1978 unless you cannot see anything in it due to the configuration of the body. If you have a full-height bulkhead, have plated over the rear window, or (like me) have a solid flap on an IW canopy, you don't need a mirror, but if you have a rear window and can see out of it from the driver's seat, the law says you must have an interior mirror.

Yet another advantage (of a very long list) to being someone who is 'closer to the ground'. Like a lower centre of gravity and finding normal legroom seats perfectly suitable.... Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Interesting, I have a full height dog guard permanently with rear bench seat squab attached to it (sounds weird but looks better than it sounds trust me!) so would that count as you can't see anything past it?
Haha true, I'll remind you of that next time you cant reach something Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

The major downside to being tall and manly (pfff) is that you smack your head on low beams, interior lights, raised cupboard doors that your other half opens and doesn't tell you, your back goes if you do anything in the kitchen as all the surfaces / sinks are designed for a woman, and its further to fall, air is thinner and if you get the tube, you can but close your eyes because to do anything else results in women believing your looking down their top...whether they put them there first or not!

Picked up a suction mount one from Halfords, sits at the very top of the screen, is pretty much identical shape to the original, has dip function and does not vibrate at high speed.
Can now see out of the windscreen perfectly. When I place the original in front you really get a sense of how unnecessary the original placement is (with the exception of the sun visors now obscuring most of the mirror when in use). Now need to find a way to cap off the original bracket? Are there versions with no mirror from the factory, ie van types, in which case what do they have in place? Also would like to cover the suction point on the windscreen with some of that dotty film that goes around modern car glass if anyone has a lead on that. |
