I took mine off for a few years and yes it was slightly noisier but in a nice way and I would put the cat back on for MoT's so there wouldn't be any hassle with the friendship I have with my MoT garage. There is a noticable difference in performance with the cat on, really seen when on a long uphill on a local main road. Last year I opened up the can and took out the innards and welded it back up empty so that the requirements for MoT's are satisfied, if your vehicle was fitted at the factory with a cat then it should be presented for MoT with a visible sign it's still present.
It has quietened it down slightly, the centre box was replaced long ago with a straight through pipe. With the empty cat the boy says that there is more turbo noise but I can't tell as it must be the same pitch as my damned tinitus
