Defender TD5 noisier after CAT removal?
After being told by various people that my 2005 Defender TD5 110 CSW would "perform better if l removed the CAT" l got it replaced with a straight through pipe.

I have to say l did not notice an improvement in performance, and now when l am at motorway speeds there is a droning or "mooing" noise from the engine that was not there before.

Is it normal to get increased noise level after CAT removal? It's fine at low speeds but l have just been to the Lakes for the weekend and there did seem to be a droning at over 60mph (and it was definitely not the missus....)

I'm going to get the CAT refitted if this is the case!
I'm driving to Skye next month and it's 400 miles!

"Perform better" is probably a bit of a misnomer. There is less restriction in the exhaust, so the turbo should spool faster. There should be no noise issue though. The early TD5's (like mine) had not cat and I have no droning. Well, nothing that can be attributed to the exhaust at least!!

I took mine off for a few years and yes it was slightly noisier but in a nice way and I would put the cat back on for MoT's so there wouldn't be any hassle with the friendship I have with my MoT garage. There is a noticable difference in performance with the cat on, really seen when on a long uphill on a local main road. Last year I opened up the can and took out the innards and welded it back up empty so that the requirements for MoT's are satisfied, if your vehicle was fitted at the factory with a cat then it should be presented for MoT with a visible sign it's still present.
It has quietened it down slightly, the centre box was replaced long ago with a straight through pipe. With the empty cat the boy says that there is more turbo noise but I can't tell as it must be the same pitch as my damned tinitus Rolling Eyes
