So I can unlock my car with a popsicle stick...
...or any other key, screwdriver, etc... It is a good thing no one knows where I am parked!

I guess the inner "thingies" inside the lock barrel have siezed or are worn out to the point where anything that fits the barrel will unlock the door. The car in question is a '99 Td5 Defender.

Besides replacing the barrel, is there anything I can do? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Yes the little metal leaves that form the pins of the lock barrel seize up and then anything that fits the slot will open the lock.

Barrel replacement is the repair as you have suggested. I just did away with them and fitted central locking instead. Still got a barrel in the rear door in case of battery/system failure.

Same problem with one of mine, I removed barrel and I fond that the lock spring plates rusted down

I removed each lock spring plates one at a time, removed spring and cleaned the lock spring plates with 1200 grit sand paper, resemble in the right order with micro fine graphite still working fine to date but also got hold one there

Thank, I may try that as well. If I do decide to replace the barrel, is there a place where I can buy a barrel keyed to my other door, or do I need to replace both if I want to use a single key for both doors? Central locking is also a great idea, but the door switches on my car don't even work properly, so I am a bit hesitant to fit more electrics to my doors as I fear it will be more of a job than I set out for... Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000
